Good idea. Don't they do this in some car races--i.e. lap leaders get extra money. I'd like to see this for any race 1500m or more--it'd probably lead to better times.

A lot of road races around here do something like that. One local Thanksgiving Day 5k gives a turkey to the leader at the mile mark. Another gives out $50 to the leader at the mile mark, but you have to finish in the top ten to get the cash.
