I agree. Sean Hartnett took some great photos. I just want to know who woke Ritz up. His face appears so relaxed he looked like he was falling asleep - not a sign of discomfort or strain at all. He definately appears to be completely in control and running well within himself.

I've seen him run three times (IL state XC, IL state track 1600/3200 double) and each time he looked like he was hurting a lot but he won all three races.
The state XC meet impressed me because he just took off sprinting after about a mile and a quarter to get a huge lead that no one challenged.
1 Matt Withrow (Sr) 14:14
2 William McCann (Sr) 14:27
3 Sean McNamara (Jr) 14:29
(3 miles, very flat course)
In the IL state track meet the early leader was Eric McTaggart (8:55 3200), running at about a 9:00 pace. At about halfway, Withrow was in the chase pack around 35-40 meters back when he started sprinting, quickly caught McTaggart and moved into the lead by about 35-40 meters, all in the same lap. As I recall, he looked like he was dying toward the end and was looking back, but held on to win by a big margin:
1 Matt Withrow (Sr) 8:57.95
2 Sean McNamara (Jr) 9:07.87
3 Eric MacTaggart (Sr) 9:09.04
In the 1600, Withrow was in third or fourth place, trailing by several seconds with about 200 meters to go. The race hadn't been too fast, but I thought there was no way he could win given the earlier 3200, but he sprinted into the lead convincingly and William McCann (second in the XC meet the previous fall and who had run 1:55 earlier in the spring) and Sean McNamara (second in the 3200 and third in the state XC) could not match his speed.
1 Matt Withrow (Sr) 4:19.07
2 William McCann (Sr) 4:21.32
3 Sean McNamara (Jr) 4:21.33
