Does anyone know if the World CC meet will be televised in the US? (I know, ha ha.)

There are ways to redirect tv feeds online, but I'm not sure that anyone in Europe would want to pay for the bandwidth charges on whatever website they tried to do it through.

Eurosport could make a bundle broadcasting this thing online and charging something like 5 Euros to login and watch it. I'd bet their servers would crash under the weight of people trying to get the feed.

If that's true, how could they be so dumb as not to do it? Probably lies in definition of "bundle."

I gotta go with Gary on this one. I'd certainly pay $5 to see it (pay-per-view) but I'd be shocked if more than a couple of thousand people in the US would. How many unique message board accounts are there?

It would be nice if a European broadcaster would offer the meet over the web for a fee (assuming they are broadcasting it). That, I think, would not cost too much extra, but they still have to go to the trouble of making a foreign market aware of the coverage and that costs money.

Now if there was US-based partner that handled all the US promotion and collection of viewer fees, that might work. Gary - ever thought of offering fee-based web-coverage of Euro meets via your site?

I've emailed Eurosport before about getting a line in the US and the respose has been that they don't have the rights to broadcast in N America -- I think that may cover internet broadcasts as well, but not radio.

The BBC, however, seems to be able to give live video/audio feed via the internet when it choses to do so, and only on certain occasions limits them to UK IPs only.

Yes. And we also thought about buying the Empire State Building and we didn't think either would fly.

From an east coast fan, I would not want the ownership of the ESB in the hands of the West Coast!!!!!

Y'all might wanna put beaches and oceans around it in Midtown!!!!!! (hahahaha!!!!!!!)

You guys know Canadian Television covers the World XC's every year right? But I think it's always the weekend after the fact. So just move to Seattle.

Re: World CC televised in US?

American television is a lost cause. I've ceased to worry or agonize over what it doesn't do. The IAAF used to offer videos of each year's World X-C race. I have them for the mid-1990s and they're great. So, if you're not hung up on "real time" viewing, that's the way to go...

OR, option two: fly to France to watch it in person. Flights this time of year are cheap and as long as you don't eat, stay in hotels, or rent a car, the whole thing won't cost much at all. (Isn't the worthless dollar a joy?)

It's easy enough to spoof an IP address to view these things. If it was offered there would certainly be enough worldwide interest to justify the expense. One or two broadcasts would demonstrate the need to do worldwide feeds for every competition. People need to get out of the 1950s and realize this and open up the sport to the potential audiences. The IAAF does a great job of talking about reaching the American public, but does absolutely nothing of any value to actually accomplish this goal. They are their own worst enemies and cannot even get out of their own way in promoting the sport in the US.

Doesn't some of that have to do with US Networks being privately run, whereas most other countries have state-subsidized networks to pay for the cost of IAAF broadcasts?

While I certainly have no trouble being sarcastic, that wasn't meant to me. I thought the wildly exaggerated parallel I drew was so obvious as an attempt at humor that I dind't bother to put a smiley at the end. We are truly flattered that you could think that we could expand into such brave new realms, but T&FN is a small business with a small staff dedicated to print journalism. You'll not see us attempting to break into the brutal-brutal-brutal video business.

The big problem is the IAAF takes 100% of the profits and owns 100% of the video rights to every single IAAF event and will not allow the host organization, LOC or Federation to make a single dime on broadcasting any IAAF Championship event. All broadcast advertising goes to the IAAF too and must be approved by them. They also have ridiculous rules on the number, size and placement of advertising signs anywhere in the venue.

Why would anyone in their right mind want to host an event from this organization if they cannot hope to make money from its media rights?

                              Earth to Monaco!!!

You are killing the sport to pad your own pockets!
