How can someone who progresses masterfully through the rounds, conserving just a little bit extra to unleash in the finals in an explosive record-tying performance not be remotely in the same league as someone who nearly redlined it in the rounds and suffered an unfortunate collapse in the finals?
Liu and Doucouré are both awesome talents, to be sure, but to say that the two are not in the same league would be to deny the exciting races to come between the two that will in all likelihood take their event into unchartered territory.
Actually he was training at FSU one winter when my daughter was on the team and I talked with him and watched him as he worked out. If I hadn't know who he was (this was after the 60'), I would never have guessed he was even a 52' jumper. Very unassuming and understated. As he went through his drills, there was nothing to indicate he was any better than the FSU jumpers.
Yes, if you saw the 60' jump, you'd know, but otherwise, not really.
