  • nationals winner 8 months after taking up the sport?

    from the usatf site

<<A promising new talent emerged in the women's pole vault as Jennifer Stuczynski, from tiny Roberts Wesleyan College in Rochester, N.Y., won the competition with a height of 4.35m/14-3.25. The 5-11 former basketball player took up the vault only eight months ago and is a sometime training partner of national high school record holder Mary Saxer.>>

    The 5-11 former
    >basketball player

Not a bad one by the looks of it:

"Wright also is on pace to break Stuczynski's records for average in a season (24.3) and points (802)."

OK, that coach up there is starting to creep me out. He gets rookies over 13 and 14' like there's no tomorrow. I always suspected something in the water in upstate NY/ Isn't that where Joseph Smith found the tablets for the Mormon church? I suspect alien abductions.

You know what's funny? My high school coach told me that I couldn't pole vault because I'm too tall!! You know how tall I am, 5'10... I think I'm going to take up pole vault!!!

Joe Dial proved that little guys can jump high, but generally speaking, the taller the better.

He's doing something few other pole vault coaches are successful at... he is getting really really GOOD athletes to focus on pole vault.

If you read the beginning of the thread it was about how after only 8 months of training she won some competition... So that's why i said as well.

And likewise if you read the beginning of this thread (or just the title itself) you'll see that you're talking about the exact same competition. "Nationals" = "US Indoor Champs"

Sounds like she is a great talent.
Makes you wonder though about the talent level of the other US vaulters who've been at it for years.

When she gets up to about the 4.50 range, we will have need for close auditing of results, what with a Mary Sauer and a Mary Saxer in the same event and at similar levels.

I'm guessing that will not be a problem with Jennifer Stuczynski?
