One would think he'd be hard to hide as he did his 2:25 kilometer repeats!

you may have to change that to 5'00 two km rpts. - his 1500 days are supposedly extinct

          Re: El G Alert!

I was at UNM last Friday (2/25) throwing in the hammer ring located on the practice fields south of the track. A Ford Excursion pulled up next to my vehicle, and out popped two athletes and a coach. I thought one looked like El G, but wasn't sure until they came around on their first lap around the practice fields. I looked over, and El G smiled, waved, and said hi. The coach wandered over to me and asked if I was a decathlete (bahaha). I asked him if that was El Guerrouj, and he said yes, and that he was his coach. He said they came to ABQ to get some different scenery from Morocco. A little later he (the coach) came over and threw shot with me a little. I asked him about rest years, Helsinki, and the World Youth Meet in Morocco this year. When El G finished his workout, the 3 of them walked over to me (maybe they thought I was someone I wasn't?), and I got a personal introduction and a handshake. I didn't know what to say, so I congratulated him on the Olympics. It was very surreal. El G, his training partner (brother?) and his coach were so friendly and outgoing. Even though I'm a perennial USATF flagwaver, I'm now a total El G fan!

                Re: El G Alert!

i doubt that the training partner is his brother. doesn't he have a full-time guy that is paid to work out with him?

Dude, you should've gotten an autograph!

                    Re: El G Alert!

He was there shortly after 11:00am and stayed until a little after noon, if you want to try. It's a great place to train. 1.5-2K each lap. Usually some place you can get in through the fence.

I thought about the autograph, but wanted to keep it low key. I think that's one of the reasons El G and others show up in ABQ. His coach thought that Paula Radcliffe might be in ABQ at this time also, and Alberto Salazar's group is supposed to be staying in Santa Fe and doing track work in ABQ.

In mid-90's I used to do 200m/400m repeats on the UNM track, and sometimes Noureddine Morceli was doing his also, except a lot faster with his pacers. One time his coach yelled at me and a friend as he was blowing us away coming into the finish. No autograph on that one either, but another great experience!
