Re: Who will reign supreme in the MEN'S 400m this year?

i like rock. he hasn't had as much big competition as wariner, et al. i think he could surprise some people. i'm not saying he'll win a wc, olypmics or even u.s. title, but he should not be overlooked. if any of the current young 400 studs would move up to 800, i could see rock being better than most of the others. last year, early in the indoor season he ran a 1:18 600 and said he didn't get out as fast as he could have.

Post Wariner's special 44.00, call me over-demanding, but i thought isn't it a shame he didn't ease up a little less and clock a 43.9x (a big differece in landmark terms), and i bet he thought the same after the victory had sunk in. The reason i thought this, is that post OG i could visulize him running plenty of 44.1s and 44.2s, but somehow felt that a sub-44 might cruely elude him. Maybe that was his zenith he wouldn't eclipse. Similar things have happened to other 21 year olds: Shirvington, Jamie Henderson(gbr) 100m. Hope my concerns are unfounded!!

Until he shows he has better speed than the 20.84 his PR (to date) indicates, he may not have the wheels to hang w/ the big boys in a race down in 44-flat range. Remember that Wariner ran a windy 20.41 as a high schooler, and a legal 20.59 last year.

Of course, like many of us, I am very curious to
see Carter's performances on 400m dash...
            A sub-45"00? Sure!
            A sub-44"50? Certainly!
A 44"00? Why not, according to his extraordinary
            talent!

do you mean the big BOY in the 44-flat range? if i recall correctly, wariner was the only one who reached that last year. i definitely think rock will lower his 400 pr (44.66, i believe) this year. like i said earlier, i'm not sure if he can win any of the major meets, and his best event some day may be the 800, but he should not be overlooked in the 400 this year.

as for his 200 time, i'm not certain, but i think he won pretty easily with that time, so some competition might bring that down as well. when he ran his 44.66 last year, he won by more than a second. i believe he and his coach will be more prepared for the big meets this year. last year, he had to peak for diii nationals, and then try to hold that peak until the trials. with di nationals being a couple of weeks later, and coach hart having "been there" before, the baylor boys and the other di athletes had a huge advantage.

Re: Who will reign supreme in the MEN'S 400m this year?

Wariner had a perfect year and we were speculating that barring injuries he would go untouched to Beijing. Now Merritt has the second fast indoor ever and we are speculating that he may pass Wariner this season already. Just because he is coming off of an Olympic high I will pick against him, the motivation to train at his fullest mentally maybe a little off and he doesn't have enough to spare to hold off the hungry US pack. Ps did Schonlebe hold the world indoor record at one time? I know he and 3 other East Germans had the world indoor 4*4 in the early 90's......
