  • Track Puzzle on Car Talk

Is our Dave Johnson responsible for this track oriented puzzle? The answer was given on the radio this morning. Good puzzle.

Do they tape delay these things in some markets? My brother-in-law heard it on the radio last week.

        Here's the puzzle

"An athlete competing in the Olympic Games puts forth a record-setting performance in the long jump.

Not only does he record the longest jump, but he sets a world record as well. His jump is accepted into the record books, and no one has jumped farther than this fellow.

But, he does not win a gold medal. In fact, he does not win a bronze medal, or a silver medal. He wins squat."

Robert LeGendre came away with a bronze for his 25'5 1/2 WR (1924), but it was Pentathlon bronze. (And with today's scoring, he would have set a Pentathlon WR, beating his own record by about 100 pts. And beating the 'winner' by 111 pts.)

There could be several correct answers here. He set it in the decathlon, it was the qualifying rounds of the meet, etc.......

                Re: Here's the puzzle

I had the radio tuned to car talk this morning to hear the "right" answers. Of course, many people sent in the "right" answer so the winner was drawn randomly. The brothers actually gave a pretty comical summary, describing the answer as the winner of the long jump in the decathlon, who then "bombed" the other nine events. Of course, even though they are New Englanders they know nothing about track. The smart brother said the decthlon gave out "so many points for first in each event, and then second, etc." Good quips about the long jump followed by the short jump, decathlon finishing with a riding lawn mower race, etc.

I asked dj that question in Fayetteville over the weekend. He had not heard about the Car Talk thing, so it must have been another Dave Johnson who submitted the puzzle.

So was it the decathlete or the ex-manager of the Cincinnati Reds?

Or the writer for the Florida Times Union of Jacksonville.
