  • Clement's Dual Citizenship

pardon me if this has been addressed on the myriad 400m posts...do any of you know how Clement plans to compete internationally? He's listed in T&FN as from Trinidad...several online articles refer to him as American. Will he compete in the US Champs, see how he fares, and then compete for Trinidad if he doesn't make the US squad?

One of the NCAA articles said he became a US citizen last year and intends to represent the USA.

Clement represented the U.S. at the IAAF World Junior Championships last year. In the unlikely event he wants to change back to Trinidad for international comp, I believe he would have to wait until at least 2007 unless he gets a waiver from the U.S.

Bob Hersh -- is this correct?

Yes, this is correct for major international competition.

He was Trinidadian when competed in the NCAA last year, but two weeks later at the USATF Juniors he had acquired U.S. citizenship

Valukevic had to do the same thing after switching his allegiance from Belarus to Slovakia.

Sounds like you will need to get excited about KC's appearance in the 400IH at the US Champs, if his quotes from the past week are any indication.

For the record, I have it in my files that he was sworn in as a U.S. citizen the Monday before he ran at the NCAA Championships

I'm excited either way. Some of that speed has to translate, one would think. And who's to say he won't change his mind after a few outdoor races under 45? He may face an interesting dilemma if Jackson, Brazell, Carter et all post some great early-season times.

As a US citizen, he can shoot for two golds, with one of them being much more secure (if they can keep drug tests from spoiling the results).
