I'm a T&F fan. I have no interest in rhythmic gymnastics, modern pentathlon or beach volleyball. The same with slalom kayaking. But a lot of people, mostly the parents and relatives of the participants in these mongrel sports, are interested in them and they make the OG's a continuos gridlock. That's why I'll bypass the OG's wherever they are and stick with the T&F WC's.

Sheepishly I admit to dating her also but I'm a New Yorker so the gunshot and the missing money were well worth the ride! Crap ...the good one got more money in the end!

The $104 per person r.t. from suburban Philly to Penn Station seems authentic. The $250 for a motel room in Lancaster is hyperbole. It might not be much of an exaggeration by 2012. I can't see anyone doing that roundtrip more than two days consecutively.

So it seems that a couple would have to spend $6500 just for the motel room and transportation to the stadium. That is before the first ticket and before the first hot dog.

Not that I'm necessarily rooting for NYC to win the bid, but that

That $250 a night motel room in Lancaster, PA I mentioned previously might not be so bad after all.

Fair enough. Call me crazy (sarcasm), but something tells me that without the Olympics, that West Side stadium won't have a track, making any future internationals a tall order.

KevinM, If New York ever held the Track and Field WC's, I'd be the first in line for tickets for the entire meeting. In a town like NYC, they wouldn't be a very big deal. Prices wouldn't be any higher than normal and transportation in and out of the city wouldn't be a problem. A monstrosity like the OG's are another thing entirely. Whereas the WC's only attract diehard T&F devotees, the OG's lure the most diverse and divergent mass of contestants, bureaucrats. entourages, officials, etc. imaginable. I luv NY. But not that much.

Less than two hours, certainly, and then just a 2-3 block walk from Penn Station to the new stadium. I could stay at my house in suburban Philly, take the commuter to Philly, the Amtrak to NYC (spending $104 round trip) and be spending the same amount of time from bed to seat as I did in Sydney, and saving money in the process.
Not that I'm necessarily rooting for NYC to win the bid, but that it may not live up to people's worst fears regarding transportation.

Trenton and New Haven were obviously my extreme points. 15 minutes closer in from Trenton and you have a ton of hotels around Princeton.
Fact remains that MSG stands on top of the busiest train station in the US, and you would only have a 10-15 minute WALK (not "crowded bus") to the proposed Oly Stadium. Getting out to the Meadowlands for concerts/games is easy enough now, and that involves going through Port Authority. I'm guessing connections to those facilities would be streamlined for 2012.
I don't necessarily have a strong opinion on whether or not NYC should get the Games, but I strongly disagree arguing against it for the reasons you listed.
