Re: Dibaba Ties Radcliffe 5K Road Record

    I took down Dibaba's splits:

    1 mi 4:47.x
    2 mi 9:36.x (4:49.x)
    3 mi 14:24 (4:47.x)
    last 200m (downhill) 27.x

Ochici was pushing from the start wtih Tirunesh shadowing her, Meselech behind her and Kim Smith just behind in 4th. By the mile the gap had widened between Smith and the top 3. At 5min into the race, Meselech went to the front and broke the wind (she was not looking very good, arms flying about the pace). That only lasted about 60s and she went back into third after the first U-turn, and Tirunesh was just shadowing Ochichi. At the second U-Turn, they made a tight turn and then Tirunesh started pushing Ochici and they switched the lead a few times -- you could tell that they were pushing and challenging one another. Then right at the turn (just over 200m to go) Dibaba launched her ferocious kick and it was all over. Very exciting race.

...only 24 sec. behind the 10th man. What is it - 130-150m?

Benita Johnson ran a 31.38 road 10KM yesterday in Spain (Cursa Bombers 10KM, Barcelona), a 10-second PB. Johnson finished second to Kenya:s Irene Kwambai.

I actually thought she'd go quicker, but apparently the pace in the opening miles wasn't as quick as it had been in previous years. With a few more 5km road races, Dibaba should be able to take the record down to 14:40 - the record is well overdue a revision (although the unofficial world best is 14:48 - Paula's 5km split en route to her 10km world best performance).

Great win all the same, and if she's beating Ochichi by 4 clear seconds, I think we can expect great things from Dibaba on the track this year.
