  • Tentative Carson Schedule Unfair To Field Eventers

    (and to their fans)

This relative to the Seniors (you know, the people trying out for the World Championships).

Thursday (nobody in the stands): 6 jump/throw finals
Friday (almost nobody in the stands): 4 finals
    Saturday (good crowd): 3 finals
    Sunday (good crowd): 3 finals

So 10 of 16 field events will basically be contested for friends and family. A disproportionate number of our greatest athletes (as compared to runners) will not get public glory, nor will the people who are buying tickets to see the Nationals--and you know attendance the first two days is going to be shabby--get to see most of the field eventers.

    Field distribution is 6-4-3-3
    Track distribution is 2-3-9-8

By way of comparison, Stanford '03 had the field finals split 3-4-5-4; close to even, but with the majority on the last two days.

USATF website does say that schedule is "tentative" and that the final schedule should be available 4/15. Let's hope the above facts are taken into consideration in any reworking.

OK, clearly USATF is right and I'm wrong. Some 3 hours this post has been up and nobody has chimed in in righteous indignation. They've obviously read the pulse of the fans correctly and you don't care about the field events either.

I think the schedule of the junior events is relevant. If they have more of their running finals on the first two days, the stands won't be empty.

Field events generally get the short end of the stick when it comes to scheduling. It sucks, but it's not anything new.

Field Eventers are conditioned to getting screwed. I have registered my protest with them, however.

Yeah, but with fewer people in the stands on Thu/Fri, I can move around closer to the field events. What about the multis? Are they going to be Thu/Fri, or will they be split? Someone noted that the Carson schedule isn't up yet, but what does the tentative look like?

They've tweaked some of the times, but distribution of field events remains the same. The big fly in the ointment--compared to the '03 version--is have two multis on each pair of days. Last time they had 3 multis the first two days.

So the Junior boys decathlon is squeezing out WC Trials jumps and throws on Saturday and Sunday. Bad trade.

                  Grass.
