American readers should note that the mens' 100 result from Gateshead can be discounted to a large extent. The athletes were called back for a non-existent false start, but Capel, Collins and Williams didn't hear. Capel let up with 10m to go ("I wasn't going to get caught on a false start again" he said in a tv interview in a reference to the 200m debacle in the 2000 OG), while Collins and Williams ran the full distance. Neither was a factor in the race, run 7-8 minutes after the first race. A 30 minute delay would have been sensible (and would have allowed better coverage of the womens' pv).
Edwards had a foul in the tj of just under 18m, and was clearly in better form than he expected. The wind was helpful in thsi event, and the LJ, though Dilworth was a long way behind the board on a windy 7.92 jump (it measured around 8.30), while Stringfellow would have won the event had his run-up been a little more precise.
