  • Garry... Does Lagat's time count for USA Consideration

    Garry Hill,

Does Bernard Lagat's time count for Top American performances or does he have to wait until he is released from the Kenyan Federation, either one year from now or 3 years from now? Thanks for the clarification.

As soon as somebody becomes an American citizen we put them on our lists, whether or not they are eligible for international competition representing the U.S.

How ironic it is that this individual who was not born here has a shot at the American record in the
      1Mile run.

What:s ironic about that? The person who holds the metric mile equivalent - 1,500m - AR wasn:t born there, either.

And now it appears that Lagat has a legit claim for full-blown American Record status going back to last May.

Do you have to be a member of the USTFA to claim an American Record? Mark Fountain lost both his indoor records (1000m and Mile Australian Records) from earlier this year and a lot of cash bonuses from Nike, because he wasn't a member of an Australian club!!

If he (Lagat) does get claim to US records, will you also add him to the US list of Olympic Medallists?

                  JRinaldi,

Then how does it work with someone like Benita? Isn't her club in Britain?

Re: Garry... Does Lagat's time count for USA Consideration

Benita is still a member of a Club in Australia (Glenhuntly), as too is Mottram (Deakin), but both rarely, if ever, compete for that club. Australia (like the UK) is run on a club system. It only costs around $100.00 to join a club, so it's no big deal. The problem is when people like Mark Fountain are living full time O/S, they forget to renew their club fee's and end up missing out on National records.
