  • Wariner Upset by Williamson

Darold Williamson beat Wariner 45.06 to 45.16. But check out Wariner; he seems to have beefed up significantly since the OG, or perhaps its the camera angle. Pretty good muscular development in less than a year.

I don:t think he is quite so "upset" by Williamson any longer... he might have been more "upset" in earlier news (http://www.trackandfieldnews.com/tfn/di ... read=11829).

The point of my post was to check out the picture of Wariner on the IAAF homepage; who looks significantly bigger all around than the Wariner on the cover of TFN (October 2004). Wariner was a skinny dude at the OG; he does not look skinny any more. I hope its just the result of intense weight training and a lot of push-ups and pull-ups.

Not such a big upset. Last year at this meet, Williamson beat Wariner by .21. And I believe Williamson has a lifetime won-lost edge in head-to-head races against Wariner. Of course, we know who won the big ones last year.

It makes little difference who wins now. How is running fast in August is what counts.

Wariner does look bigger in the picture. But the angle of the picture may have given this appearance.

I bet this came as no surprise to Wariner, Williamson or Hart. Williamson has to be sharper much sooner than Wariner. Seems like everyone is on track (npi!).

              Re: Wariner Upset by Williamson

I've been saying it since last fall: While Wariner had a FANTASTIC year last year, and certainly should improve(though any extra muscle development does not necessarily bode well for the 400), ultimately I believe Williamson will be the better of the two in terms of career accomplishments when all is said and done.

Of course, it is WAAAYYY to early this year to say that torch has passed in any way, shape, or form, but this victory should not be surprising.

Agree. It is WAY too earlier to draw conclusions on any runner!

That'll burn off weight! It's the result of eating.

                    Re: Wariner Upset by Williamson

As a big fan of Williamson and someone that was a bit disappointed in his indoor accomplishiments this 45 flat is really good news., anyone that has heard him speak in post race interviews knows that he is a person of great character and integrity. If we could have a few more "Darold" types in the 400, 200 and 100 this sport would be doing a great deal better in the PR department.

It seems that some posters want to bury MJ for what she (hasn't) done in her races this spring.

There are a lot of athletes out there in the 400, 200, and 100 with character and integrity, they are just not the ones getting the post race interviews. Darold is definitely a class act, but to single him out as the only one in the sprints with the right outlook just shows that the sport is doing a terrible job of showcasing athletes.

Wariner does look a little stronger in the picture and I suspect that it will help him as he evolves further this year (I am not expecting as much change as last year). Maybe the weight is to put to rest all of those calls for him to run the 800 ;>)

I suspect that the schedule this year is different than last and that there will be a different type of buildup; we are just starting to see the public part of this buildup now. Summertime beckons!

When using the word "upset"relative to Wariner and Williamson, allow me to point out that since they left HS, Williamson has a 9-8 lead in head-to-head matchups, and in their final HS meet, Williamson won that also.
