    Re: Wariner Upset by Williamson

I was fortunate enough to see the high school state meet races between them. Although Williamson has an edge in head2head, I still consider it an upset considering that Wariner wears a target being that he won the Oly Games in great fashion. Remember he has been touted the great heir to the 400 throne. I saw him at Texas Relays and he still looked small to me but ran with ease. Let's keep in mind that Williamson's training is not only geared towards the WChamps but the year end college season as well, thus his speed training may have started a little earlier. Wariner may be in position to even the score in coming weeks.

when all is said and done, the fastest 400 meter man will sit atop the throne!!!!

The only safe bet, is he will be running for the USA....

But, I do believe Wariner did not run an undercover campaign and he is just getting going. I'm sure with the direction and training of M. Johnson and Clyde Hart, JW will run fast and beat people when it counts.

There is just something very admirable to the public and the average guy that calls himself "fan" about the fellow that gets the job done and then has that generous, kind and humble attitude.. It is a sign of great character and Williamson has that. It is genuine and real and these types come across like giants on and off the track because of it.. it is the Calvin Smith/Mike Marsh star appeal. And while the media cant recognize these types because the media culture, being so far removed from the values of the average fan, demands trash talking dopes, buffones and fools... it is the "real-deal" types that the overwhelming vast majority of fans truely admire. .Otis Harris has it and there are many others as well. Start showcasing that athlete personality type and this sport could get on the radar screen of the average "sports fan" again. Of course you cant fake it.. the fan can see right through it no matter how hard they try to package a gloating buffoon the fan will see through it..
... nothing really ever changes my friend, new lines for old, new lines for old.

It now appears that we have detailed all the Wariner-Williamson head-to-heads in the 400, and Williamson leads 11-8.

I think the average fan enjoys the show. The actual "fanatics", or those of us that post on Track Bulletin Boards, probably prefer a purer form of the spot -- minus the antics.

However, if WINNING and talking trash gets you noticed, and makes you marketable (endorsements, appearance fees, sponsorhips, etc)...go for it!
