I was looking in a SPRINGCO catalog and they have some 16lb shots that are of different diameters. The smallest is 110mm. I assume my cast iron (El Cheapo) shot is bigger than that. Is 110mm legal? The Brass and stainless shots are a little pricy, are they worth it? Do they fly better?

Re: What's legal shot put size
There is a size minimum, not wure what it is though. My shot is, I think the biggest one out there-it is also the cheapest. There may be some issue of wind resistance, but I done think its a big deal. I mean look at the world class guys, they use big rocks... I think the biggest thing with the size of the shot is how big of hands you have.
I have real big hands and the bigger implement fells more comfortable and stable in my hand.

Re: What's legal shot put size
For a 16-lb shot, the diameter has to be between 110 and 130mm. Check out http://www.iaaf.org/newsfiles/9577.pdf for detailed IAAF rules on this.Było smaszno, a jaszmije smukwijne...

Another handy online reference is the USATF Rulebook: http://www.usatf.org/about/rules/2003/2 ... FRules.pdf
Rule 202 has a nice table of information about weights and measures for the shot.

Re: What's legal shot put size
Thanks for the info. My hands aren't the biggest and I am thinking of going for the 100mm shot. On the spin for the shot, do you want to start in the back of the ring with your back to the front like the discus? After the Iowa Games this weekend I am going to try to get better at the spin. Right now I throw 5ft less than the glide and have a problem not getting all the way around to throw. Seem to get off to the right some. Maybe a smaller shot will help me hold it to my neck better. I have my thumb completely down now, something I wasn't always doing before.
