    Re: Gregorio 17.71 !!

    >>>he's something like 6-8, 225<<

    I don't think he's 6-8, probably closer to
    >6-5.

And why can't he break the WR? He may not have the runway speed of a
    >Jon Edwards, but he's pretty powerful in his phases.<

the main problem is that he is to heavy

i read that he was ~ 103kg, which really is too much in order to be that quick on the runway

i get a rough estimate that every 1kg he loses in wt., should ideally convert to

    ~ 8 - 9cm

in extra distance, based on increased speed ( retaining muscle mass )

if he slimmed down to ~ 100kg & retains the muscle mass & athleticism, his increased speed should translate to

    ~ 18.00m

the boy needs to go on a diet !

he's 6-7 1/2/225 (2.02/102); if you've ever seen him jump in person you'll quickly realize he indeed packs too much avoirdupois (no relation to antipodes). Great power forward or tight end in the making though.

edited because I typoed and gave him an extra inch

his legs look like supports for the Golden Gate Bridge!

His Long Jump PR is 8.22m (-1.4m/s) so that body weight can't be doing him that much trouble, perhaps he is better jumping into the wind due to his physique. Give him between -0.1 to -1.5m/s and he'll eat Olsson for breakfast!

Some of his marks last year:

            17,72 last year: +1,4
            17,37 last year: -1,2
            17,33 last year: -0,3
            17,31 last year: +0,7
            17,31 last year: +0,0
            17,25 last year: +0,3
            17,25 last year: +1,7

Problem is trying to get him into a position to jump with negative wind... his best negative wind performance was 35cm shorter than his best plus wind jump.

And here's your pedantic editor with the word
              >lesson for today: "antipodes" is not a synonym for south of the equator. It
              >means diametrically opposed on the globe. So the Brits (who popularized the

Probably, then, Siberia would be antipodean to Brazil.

And based on this theory, he could slim down to 80 kg and jump between 19.60 and 19.80. I wonder why he never thought of it himself...

Aren't we all glad that such a fine physical specimen is in our sport. He could so easily be a Volleyballer.

                      you are stupid

i said, how much weight he can lose until he starts actually losing muscle & thus losing power

he weighs ~ 103kg, but looks to be carrying at least 5k of excess fat on him

if he starts losing weight beyond this mark, he will almost certainly start to lose muscle , hence less power & less sprint speed on runway

if he wanted a guess at his potential, then in an ideal scenario, this loss of 5kg would translate into a speed increase & distance increase of 40 - 45cm

he has the potential to jump 18.10+ with better conditioning

                        Re: Gregorio 17.71 !!

if a "fat" horizontal jumper wants to know how far they could potentially jump when slimmed down to their ideal, muscular weight ( see a physiologist to see what that ideal weight should be ), then, a simple formula will give them an idea:

                        potential distance = old distance * ( current weight / ideal weight ) ^ 0.5

(assuming old distance was set with their current weight )

in gregorio's case, he has current weight of 103kg & old distance of 17.72m & say an ideal weight of 98kg

                        so, for him:

                        potential distance = 17.72 * ( 103/98 )^ 0.5 =

                        18.16

this is obviously an ideal scenario & virtually no athlete can convert the increased speed to the full extra distance, but in his case, i don't see why he shouldn't at least go over 18m with a 5kg weight loss

a similar method can be used for "fat" sprinters as well
