My Children ages (F/14, F/13, F/12, M/11) have all fell in love with track and field on their second of our two oldest daughter AAU season. Because they are behind on the mechanics’ of outdoor track, I need to hire a personal trainer in the areas of track and field to assist me with they off -season progress. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Re: Need a personal trainer for my children in Charlotte, NC
The best direction you can take for your childrens's sake is to let them remain CHILDREN! They're still far too young for this personal trainer nonsense. If they've got any talent it will emerge on its own quite nicely.

I hear what some of you are saying, but remember that at ages 11-14, millions of kids are in practice regiments in baseball, basketball, soccer and many other sports.
I think the important thing here is moderation, intelligent choices and keeping it fun. If this parent doesn't have a club or middle-school team these kids can participate in, then it's reasonable to hire someone. It would also be a good idea to check out available competition throughout the year in their area so they have something to shoot for.
The idea is that they have something to start with when they get to HS.

You are not getting any good leads from us, but since you said track 'mechanics', I think that's a great idea. Learning the skills: hurdles, jumps, throws, etc. is a GREAT idea at this age. Getting into hard running or lifting programs is a whole 'nuther story.
Anyway - contact UNCC's track office. They would know their way around Charlotte.

Get them involved with a local age group track program. There should be some near you and the coaches can be quite good if you look around. Take a look at the results of the age group meets and obvioulsy there is some good coachign and kids (parents) involved.

I suggest Larry Frederick. He had a running store, Run for Your Life, which he has sold but remains actively involved with.
You can reach Larry at: [email protected]
He understands the nuiances and the needs of younger as well as old runners

I wouldn't choose Larry. Larry is a great guy but I don't think young people will mesh with his personality. Also Larry specializes in working with older recreation runners.
I'd suggest Jim Parrish. He actually coached me about 10 years ago as part of an AAU club. He currently is a coach at Charlotte Country Day School. I think he is now the head strength and conditioning coach. He has a broad based knowledge of the sport and can help work on the skills your kids need at their current ages so that they will be prepared for later. He's coached high school and club and even though he is a strength coach track and field is his specialty. Give Country Day a call and see if you can find him.

Re: Need a personal trainer for my children in Charlotte, NC
Hello,
I am a former All-American and international competitor in the horizontal jumps and sprints. I have coached four North Carolina State champions since leaving the sport competitively several years ago. Your children are not too young to start taking their athletic training seriously, and if they are indeed enthusiastic about the sport, I would certainly advise you to pursuade them to be serious about it, for the strict discipline and training that is a prerequisite for success in this sport is something that will assist their character in any endeavor that they aspire for the rest of their lives. I currently live in Bertie County NC, but may be moving to Cumberland County in the next week or two. E-mail me and I will give you an initial consultation on what your plan of action should be. PEACE!
