Sorry, but the humor message board is somewhere else on the web.

I think what "kidding" is trying to point out is that the existing WR of 2:54.20 is an AVERAGE of 43.55 per leg.
(Jerome Young 44.3, Antonio Pettigrew 43.2, Tyree Washington 43.5, Michael Johnson 43.2)

I'd say there's a chance that the U.S. will win the gold with not even one member of the team--including Tyree Washington--splitting that fast.

I think the 4x100 men's(USA),if they pass very well, especially since Bernard Williams is running so well right now. Also the 110 hurdles. Allen Johnson and Anier Garcia will push each other to a very fast time. The men's 1500 if El Guerrouj gets a good first 2 laps to set him up to strike later in the race. Women's pole vault.

Men's chances of WR at worlds:

            200,400,800,5k,10k,MAR,HJ,LJ - no chance

            100,1500,ST,4x400,PV - very tiny chance

            TJ,D,SP,J - tiny chance

400h,HT - small chance with Sanchez and Japanese Hammer guy

4x100,DEC - mild chance - if everyone's healthy with good passes for US 4x1, or if one of the big Deca guys really steps up.

110h - best chance (though still mild/moderate), if the top 2-3 guys push each other in ideal conditions, we could see a 12.87-90.

              Men
              No way in the 1500.
Yes way in the 110H for AJ, but it would be tough.
4x1 possible for USA, with brilliant passing (i.e. actual practices)
              4x4 no way
              Dec outside chance
              don't see ANY happening
              Women
              PV best chance(!)
              TJ chance
              JT definitely (not . . . ever)
              HT who knows

As far as the women go: change 400m from "tiny chance" to "no chance". Change steeple to "no chance" since they're not running it. (U. of Toledo's Briana Shook simply would not win a national title at any distance where a WC spot was on the line.) Change 10k to "mild chance"; Radcliffe ran 30:01 in a driving rainstorm at last year's Euro Champs, and she appears to be in even better shape this year.

mens vault will not see a world record for a very very long time unless they go back to the old pegs. with old pegs you could see a record sooner than you you might think.

Hah! Only if you are keeping separate WRs for the new pegs. There is ZERO chance of the existing record being broken.

No chance with the Cuban in the TJ. At least not at the Worlds. She's an expatriate who wants to compete for Britain but the Cubans haven't given her a release. We won't be seeing her in Paris. (Unless the situation has undergone a sudden turnaround that has escaped me.)

Discus is a zero chance. For one simple reason: wind (or the lack thereof).

You could probably take the 10 best discus throwers in history, at the peak of their form, and they could compete for a million-dollar prize every day for a week in the Paris stadium and there wouldn't be a WR. Big discus marks only happen with a strong quartering wind, and that doesn't happen in big-bowl stadia.
