Re: Davies, bronze medallist, passes away

It's sad to learn of his early death. Many of us remember that great 1500m final in Tokyo, in which New Zealand dominated, with Snell winning and Davies getting third.
Davies was leading until late in the race, and somewhere I've seen a video interview of Davies in which he described how he was surprised to find himself in the lead at that point in the race, and then Snell came flying past, spraying big chunks of the track in his wake.
I think that Davies was one of the few NZ athletes of that era who was not coached by Arthur Lydiard, but I can't remember with certainty.

John Davies was certainly coached by Arthur Lydiard, and coached numerous athletes himself - including WR holders Dick Quax and Anne Audain - utilising the training methods made so well known by Lydiard.
