  • no mouth-shooters in the 100M

Over the last few years we have had guys blazing the track with sub 9.90 secs performnances leading up to big games. These performances are usually accompanied with media-hyped "big talks" as precursers. Where are the mouth-shooters? where are the limelight-seekers? where are the crowd -pulling chats? It seems no one is certain of mounting the podium. It seems as if the lack of tongue-wagging times so far have humbled the medal-hopefuls. The current 100M times, except for the two done by the Aussie and Tim, are at best modest and pedestrian. A final consisting of Collins, Aliu, Montegomery, Green, Williams, Lewis-Francis, Malcolm, Drummonds may not produce a sub 10.00secs performer. What's the matter guys?

Add Deji Aliu to the list, as he recently went sub-10.

Their pedestrian times haven't humbled them much. Mo still insists that he will win the world title, & not too long ago talked about running three 9.7s. However, Mo sounds more like he is trying to convince himself. Montgomery still thumps his chest, & the two went back & forth the week of USA championships. Dwain Chambers still insists that he will break Montgomery's world record, in 9.65.

I love trash talk, but only when it's backed up with hot times! So far, the 100 guys haven't produced. Nevertheless, except the volume to increase next month leading up to the world championships.

I think the best answer is honestly the current crop of sprinters are solid but certainly not great at least so far. Spanning the years 1996-2002 we have witnessed some of history's greatest sprinters in Bailey, Fredericks, Boldon & Greene.
Greene, Boldon & Fredericks as a group have run 97
sub 10.00 second 100 meters lifetime. They are truly Track & Field Hall of Famers. Unfortunately
time, injuries & possibly loss of motivation has eroded their skills even though all three men still compete. World record holder Tim Montgomery has had alot of distractions which has to affect his performance this year. He'll rebound next year if he stays healthy.
Because there are no standouts this year in the sprints, the World title really up for grabs which should be exciting for us sprint fans.
Personally I like Justin Gatlin to grab some big wins & fast times in Europe even though he didn't qualify for the Worlds. Looking forward to seeing the 16 year old wonder Bolt & another look at the mystery man Kederis who should be regarded as the favorite for 200 meter gold.
This year no sprinter has any right to shoot off their mouths. This year's "World Fastest Human"
could be anybody. Even Tim is going to have to hustle to get a medal.

The hopefuls might want to consult Dennis Mitchell for mouth-shooting tips. Oh Shit!! I forgot, they can talk with John Drummond, he plans to be in Paris.
