  • john gilbert --sprinter

I have a bet with some friends about John Gilbert, a sprinter from Santa Barbara, CA. I recall that he got third place in the 100m. in the 1963 USA-USSR meet in Moscow. Further, I think that this was the first time in the meet series that the US did not finish 1-2 in the 100m. Am I right? If you can provide information I would be grateful.

You are correct. Gilbert was second in the AAu meet to Bob Hayes and third in the US vs USSR dual meet, if I am correct. A russian named Alexander Kornelyuk was second.

Aleksandr Kornelyuk was only 13 in 1963. He ran with me.
