  • Will Gatlin Win 100 Again Next Year?

    History is against him.

    Would you believe there hasn't been a successful title defense since Carl Lewis won 1981-82-83? (He didn't win in '84, but that's becuase he didn't run when it was separate from OT, but did win more important OT.)

    Before that, you have to go to Steve Williams 1973–74.

        There's too much US depth at the top (oxymoron?) to say he's a lock, but he certainly SEEMS to be getting better. I'll put a quid on him (no idea how much $ that is).

          Greene never won twice in a row? Interesting. I think Gatlin could do it, He is still young and has a some years of improvement ahead of him.

            If he gets to rest again while everyone else has to run the first round of the 100 I wouldn't bet against him.

                Yea, but if he runs one more round of the 100, he will run 10.4 in the finals because he is that much more tired and his hamstring will explode in the 200 semi's right?

                  Your sarcasm is noted, but considering the WAY he won, with an obvious strength advantage over the last 20 meters, yeah, it made a difference.

                  I'm sure both Scott and Crawford would have liked to seen how they might have finished with one less 100m race in their legs before that final, especially Scott.

                      >Greene never won twice in a row? Interesting.

                      He took advantage of his WC byes every odd year after '97, DNC'd in '98, and won in '00, '02, and '04. So effectively, Greene was only US Champion 4 out of his 9 years of competition (97-05)!

                      It's also interesting to note the margins of victory in those races. He was chased to the line on 3 of the 4 occasions (twice by Montgomery).

                      '97 --> 0.02 s (Greene 9.90, Montgomery 9.92)
                      '00 --> 0.06 s (Greene 10.01, C. Johnson 10.07)
                      '02 --> 0.01 s (Greene 9.88w, Montgomery 9.89w)
                      '04 --> 0.01 s (Greene 9.91, Gatin 9.92)

                      ** PS: GH, the History of US Nationals results archive is missing '04 and '05 (although the latter is understandable).

                        My memory is a bit fuzzy, but didn't Mo win in '95? I know he at least made the team.

                        This is what made me scratch my head so much when people suddenly started touting him as the big new sprinter in '97 . . . . because as far as I knew at that time, he was already seeing SOME success, medaling (and possibly winning?) USATF's two years prior . . .

                          Greene was 2nd in '95, but according to the archive the top 3 were separated by less than 0.01s! It was Marsh, Greene, and Mitchell in 10.23. He also didn't advance past the quarters at the '95 WC.

                          But his times were obviously nothing spectacular in '95 (the "dark ages" of US sprinting), although he did have a 9.88w (but with a +5.3 wind). He switched coaches and moved from Kansas to LA between then and '97. He also flopped at the '96 Championships / OG trials, not even qualifying for the finals.

                          So, the flurry over this "new" sprinter was the guy who seemingly came from 10.2 land to run multiple 9.90s (in the rain, as I recall).
