    Question:
How many, if any, athletes have ever won an NCAA I championship as an individual and then later as a Head Coach?

Just off the top of my head, probably only Jess Mortensen and Doug Brown.

Outside the sport of the track, as an Iowa native I'd be remissed if I didn't mention, one of the greatest ever-

DAN GABLE, as an athlete at Iowa State, NCAA titles, Oly title, as a coach at Iowa many NCAA titles, and coached many Oly medalists.

I believe that Mortensen, Brown, Thomson, Dellinger constitute the entire list.

If you want to include cross country (where Dellinger also scores) you can add Fred Tootell and Alex Wilson. I find it interesting/amusing that their athletic specialties are rather far removed from cross, as Tootell was an NCAA hammer champion and Wilson a quartermile winner.

If your adding cross country, add this; of those listed, who has won an ncaa championship in both cross country and track and field and then come back as a head coach to win an ncaa title?
