Also we are now hearing that the U.S. team has had medals taken from winners because there is an anti-sweep rule.(one country can't win all three medals)

Actually the current population of the U.S. is 291,785,416. Using total population as an indicator of performance is not accurate. My 92 year old grand-mum isn't going to compete in any track meet, but she is counted in the census, also countries aren't allowed to send teams in proportion to their population. In that way, lesser populated countries are over represented. It is really difficult to tell if Canada, the U.S., or Cuba and Brazil are having off years.

Just curious, but what qualifies as a 'big nation' in the Americas? With a population of about 30 million, does Canada qualify for that?

Also, for some reason, standards for the Canadian team this year were much harder than those of the Games themselves, most were pretty much the same as IAAF 'A' or 'B' standards. Kind of limits the number of available TnF athletes.

For that matter, neither did the USA.

Canada did not send its best to the Pan Ams. Top sprinters Macrozonaris and Browne weren't there but they'll be in Paris. Same with Shane Niemi, last year's Commonwealth 400 runner-up (45.09). I am not sure what Athletics Canada's reasoning is in these matters but it appears that they don't consider the Pan Ams to be as important as the Commonwealth Games.

Right. "It just goes to show you, it's always something."

    Never mind.

No, it's not Roseanne Roseannadanna. Dave has it right. Emily Litella was the Gilda Radner character that was hard of hearing and would rant on some misheard topic (i.e. the 1976 presidential erections) ending with "never mind" after being corrected. Roseanne Roseannadanna was the Gilda Radner character that told kooky stories about things that got her thinking (i.e. Know what roughage is?). Just wanted to set the record straight. Back to Track and Field.

That means nothing. Presumably a big country would be sending a solid team of athletes that have met A standards and are from a bigger pool. By defintition(and in actual fact), their 650 have to be considerably better athletes than Canada's 422 who might be filling B standard slots and did not have to beat as large a group of more qualifed athletes to get there. Population vs medals is a more appropriate comparison.

ok, back to the topic, as best I can glean from posted results, the US has won 167 medals while sending 650 athletes whilst Canada has won 72 with 422 competitors. Looking at those ratios, Canada appears weaker.

PS. I was not able to find how many Cubans are competing this yr.
