  • Suzy out of WC :(

    http://www.suzyfavorhamilton.com/suzynews/index.htm

I wanted to get the word out that I will be unable to compete at the World Championships in Paris. About 10 days ago, I came down with a pretty bad lower calf strain. My therapist, Gerard Hartmann, has put me through intense therapy and I see the progress, but the Championships are coming too soon. Gerard has advised me that the injury needs more therapy and a gradual return to running. He feels the rounds and intensity of the Championships would be too much for my calf to handle at this time. Though I’m extremely disappointed, I’m taking Gerard’s advice because I trust his judgement, and don’t want to risk further damage to the injury with an Olympic year approaching. Walking away from the Championships while in the form of my life is so difficult (training was going supurb), but the unfortunate timing of the injury leaves me little choice. Gerard expects a full recovery in six weeks.

    Thanks and Regards,
    Suzy Favor Hamilton

How come so many Americans end up coming up with injuries/excuses before or during championship meets? I recall a problem a few years back with an American women 1500 runner in a championship race that couldn't make it through the final. I think she complained of dehydration. Then there was another different American women who suddenly was injured before a big meet - also a couple years ago.

There is a definate pattern here.

Jacobs questionable, Hamilton out, Runyan out. Whats up?

When someone comes along who is so far ahead of the pack -- and I'm referring to the Turkish woman who's running 3:55 and practically lapping the field -- my guess is the enthusiasm of Americans to compete against her before a TV audience starts to disappear. Does it do Suzy or Regina any good (in their image, endorsements, etc.) to be buried by a superior runner? Of course I have no idea what their injury situation is, this is really not meant to be critical.

Trials too early! That's the problem. They have to be on the top of their game in both June and August. Most other countries have their nationals during the GP break. You can't be up all the time!

Too bad. If someone could hang on to the pace, it could have been a perfect set-up for an American Record, even if they were a couple of ticks behind.

          Love your website.

Neither Suzy, Marla or Regina needed to be at the "top of their game" for the nationals. They could have virtually trained through the meet.

Its their fault if they put too much importance on winning Nationals rather than peaking for the Worlds.

Too bad! I agree that this could have been a potentially AR race.

I suppose that Suzy will be out for the rest of the year. Her European racing this year had been pretty sparse but she was likely planning to hit the rest of the big meets after the WC.

Is Regina Jacobs running or not?

What TV audience would that be?

Along the lines of what JSquire said....I think our system is still rooted back in the school season--going from March thru June. Our top performers have a hard time breaking away from that tradition and peaking for the meets that really count (internationally) later in the summer.

I don't think either one of them was going for the gold. A medal (of any color) would have been a great achievement.

Yes, any color is good, but perhaps not if you're not even on the homestretch when someone is finishing first. The women's final is on Sunday, so I'd guess it will be televised on ABC's coverage.

SPARE US THE SOB STORY SUZY !

in truth i did not expect suzy to do anything this time either, other than withdraw. at least a few years back she would make a desparate lunge in the straightway or a dramatic collapse.
suzy has never won a medal at a major championships and never will. the truth needs to be said and the competitors need to be separated from the wannabes...

so what is the big deal to lose to somebody who is faster. for a decade male quartermilers and half lappers lined up against MJ with absolutely no chance of winning, but they gave it their best.
in my opinion there is nothing more anti american than giving up before the battle. if our troops had done that we would be speaking german or japanese now, but that is another story...
