Great 5k. I never thought El G would beat both Bekele and Chebii yet not win! Very smart race by him -- he rightly judged that his penultimate lap would put those two away -- but in the end he was beaten by a phenomenal young athlete.

    Congratulations, Kipchoge. Ulijaribu sana.

Yes, a remarkable performance by all 5k medalists. Bekele had the balls to set the early tempo, El G.'s race plan was flawless and in the end the freshest legs prevailed. El G has now established himself as one of the best 5 guys in the world as well as the most dominant miler in history. This should give him a lot of confidence going into next year. Will the Athens schedule accomadate the 15/5? What about the 5/10?

This WC schedule was perfect and set up one of the most dramatic 5000s I've ever seen.

          Guesstimates follow
          Straight extrapolation (1609.344/2000*5min 7.33secs) gives a 4:07.31 last mile
          The better extrapolation (1*2:24.33 + 0.609344*2:43.02) gives a 4:03.67 last mile
It would be nice to see the actual last mile splitas they may have slowed in the 1st 400 of the penultimate 1000m which would mean it could have been faster than 4:03
