  • Lindgren as new UH Cross Country Coach

Recent scene at the University of Hawaii:

"OK, ladies and gentlemen, meet back here at 2am for our 20-miler, so we can get the 200 for this week"

I also notice that Hawaii is now being spelled Hawai'i in many places. Is this new, or have I not been paying proper attention to the geography memos (ala Beijing/Peking)?

no, i dont talk to them you big silly!

seriously im starting to love gardening and mostly flowers. their so beautiful and cherrie, its either because im a latent homosexual, (not that there's anything wrong with that, but unlikely because my wife of 20 years is a knockout), or im getting really old and crying at commercials.

id love to garden with lindgren. does that sound like a tv show? gardening with lindgren. i dont know if i can get up at 2 am and plant bulbs for 3 hours though!

          another UH Lindgren article

          http://starbulletin.com/2005/10/02/news/story02.html

          excerpt:

"Jimmy Carter's responsible for bringing me to Hawaii. In 1980 he stopped the Olympic Games. When the Associated Press called me to ask me what I thought about stopping the Olympic Games, I told them I thought it was an inept president doing something that he knew nothing about, that the Olympics were the only place where we had non-political competition between all the countries in the world and for him to politicize it like that was a stupid thing to do by a stupid president," Lindgren said.

[NOT to rehash the JC boycott - that's just his explanation of why he ended up in Hawaii]

Gerry is in a pickle now, I imagine. Having gone "public" by accepting a job that invites press scrutiny, he has to put up with legitimate questions from the local papers. But Gerry still hews to his "never been married, never had kids" story (which is knocked down when the Star-Bulletin's Dave Reardon talks to the wife of Gerry's HS track coach.) That in turn puts him close to the edge of being a resume-cooker, which gets football coaches fired every year or so.

Will be interesting to see how this shakes out.

Well, there are certain areas of his resume, as it relates to distance running, that are beyond reproach.

As opposed to that ridiculous Twilight Zone event at the Masters' championship?

                    Breaking news from Honolulu:

World-renowned football star O.J. Simpson will join the University of Hawai'i football program as an assistant coach, head coach June Jones announced. Simpson, 58, takes over the coaching of running backs.

Considered one of the greatest rushers of all-time, Simpson's football resume is impressive. During his college years, he won the Heisman Trophy in 1968 at USC, ran for 2,003 yards in the NFL in 1973, was All-Pro five times, was MVP in 1973, and rushed for 11,236 career yards. He was a TV analyst and actor after his pro career ended.

"We expect O.J. to juice up our offense," Jones said. "He's the perfect candidate to inspire our young men. He'll also help out the track team in the spring, taking time to show our sprinters and hurdlers how to run."

I realize you don't mean to, but the implicit comparison of OJ to Lindgren is way over the line. OJ represents one of the most odious miscarriages of justice in US legal history (IMO).

Every since Washington Post reporters created the Watergate scandle and deposed President Nixon news reporters have clammored to create controversy. It is sad that you can't trust sports reporters to report sports, but I guess we are just supposed to live with it. I don't, and that gets me in trouble. If a reporter comes to me in the clothing of a sports reporter but in his heart he is a rag-magazine reporter, I show no truth and honesty. I lie; I create falsehoods; I say one thing and then turn around and say the exact opposite. So I guess I deserve to get hammered. I wish everyone would treat rag-reporters as I do because if enough of us put them down maybe we could achieve honest sports reporting again. We should not have to run away from sports reporters.

AS for coaching at U of Hawaii, I'm LOVIN IT. I inherited a team whose top runners left the team and almost none of the runners I have ran through the summer. So I had a team out of shape and rather slow. They show such courage and heart I want to cry sometimes. They really do try hard. I think I might have a good team come out of it. Coaching them is ah honor and a thrill. As for my sorbid background, sports reporters have already polled the team to try and stir up controversy and my evil ways have made front page reading in the Honolulu Star Bulletin. What's next?
