Gerry shouldn't limit himself to coaching!

Gosh, he also should fill in as a Philosophy professor -- specializing in a new form of situational ethics: It's OK to lie to reporters who aren't kiss-ass.

So what lessons will his athletes derive from this latest admission? That journalism is all about making people look bad? That reporters are in the humiliation biz?

Beyond that, I'd like Coach Lindgren to conduct a seminar. Call it "How to tell a rag-reporter from a legitimate sportswriter." That would be entertaining. Add mind-reading to your list of talents.

Let's hope the good citizens of Hawaii see Gerry's potential in Republican politics. Send GL to Washington, where he can lead a drive to amend the First Amendment.

He and W would be great buddies.

why the anger? if gerry doesnt mind coming off as a loon who really cares if he lies to a reporter.
he feels he's been burned over and over. have you?

I could report that your post says "ken stone endorses lying to reporters and wants gerry to run for prez" because that what you wrote.see below-

The motto of this Forum is "Facts, not Fiction". It seems to me that no one wants to discuss running here, just gossip. For openers, read Gerry's book; its loaded with great info. and although most of us cant come close to running his workouts or acheiving his success (at least in the short term), the book serves as a great source of inspiration. Lets talk about running and forget all the gossip BS; thats for another class of people, not runners.

              >For openers, read Gerry's book; its loaded with great info.

From Page 3 of "Gerry Lindgren's Book on Running":

"In the '60s, if you ran on the streets of any major city in the world, you would have been considered strange. You might have been arrested, as the subject of this story was 17 times."

(Gerry writes in the third person in the book, attributing the story to his shadow, FYI.)

              From the Hawaii Star-Bulletin story:

"The charismatic Steve Prefontaine and marathoner Frank Shorter generally get more credit than Lindgren for stimulating the running boom. And Lindgren's stories -- some dubious -- about being arrested, detained and shot at by police for being mistaken for a bank robber, might have discouraged some from taking up the sport.

"Bang, a shot right across my head and I didn't know I'd been hit until I went home and saw a crease," Lindgren said with a laugh the other day.

Leta Walters (wife of GL's old HS coach) laughed, too.

"Arrested 17 times? Yes, the police were concerned, but he wasn't arrested," she said.

OK, so what's fact -- and what's fiction?

anybody running down the street at 2:30 in the mornin would get the police's attention. the rest is fiction.

Re: Lindgren as new UH Cross Country Coach

Running the back roads in upstate new York in high school in the mid-60s often attracted notice and comments ("Why are you running around in your underwear?") but never gunfire or arrest. But then, I wasn't running past banks, or at 2:00 in the morning.

I still run on the backroads of WNY maybe 50 times a year and will do it 4 times this week-end. Many pick-up trucks with gun racks, game in the back and drivers with missing front teeth. Only there part time and have had more run-ins with people than where I live.

sounds like you've had the 'Deliverance' experience. No squealing like a pig, I hope!

sad . . . but the last line is poignant:
                            "He's still in my prayers."

I don't know why the stories about his past are a surprise to anyone, particularly a journalist.
