Yes, but that does not mean that they are inaccurate.

Let Lindgren coach, the only scenario to bash is the school he is coaching...not very likely to eventually put forth a solid x-c or track team, he's not on the mainland...maybe that is where he wants to be, but it is also a situation of working with the best he can get(which isn't much)...

Or maybe he'll get's his hand on a bunch of walk-ons that will do as he says(and as he did) and 3 years from now, everyone will be like "damn, where did that come from"..

I've never heard of Ken Stone, but you're a very sad and ignorant person.

I first heard of Gerry Lindren when he raced Jim Ryun in an indoor 2 mile event, which I believe was in 1963.

Lindren ran away with the race from the start to win it in 9 minutes flat.

Ryun fell down and ran something like 9:22, all the other runners were lapped.

Gerry Lindgren inspired me greatly and still does.

I'd never heard of Steve Prefontaine till much later. Yes he was quite inspirational too. I heard of Frank Shorter around the time of his marathons, but he never inspired me. I don't know why he is credited with a running boom. Bill Rodgers probably had much more to do with that, and many others. It was a time that was magic, and inspiring to most all of us.

Something about winning a big, important race during the time when running/jogging really took off, and being the first American to win this big important race in a long, long time.

Your key phrase is "during the time when running really took off".

Yes he got 1st in one race during that time, after the running boom had already begun. And he thus given some credit for starting it, though he didn't.

Geesh Lindgren, Ryun, Mills, Schul and many others were popular long before Shorter came along.

Women were also long into making their own gains on the way, though not yet supported by international athletics.

Not only was Shorter more successful than the others, but he also made later stuff more "possible". Winning the marathon Gold gave American distance running credibility (Kenny was 4th and Bachelor(?) was 9th as well) both outside the US and inside. I think this made it easier for more runners to push. I, who could not make his HS varisty XC squad, ran multiple 2:30 marathons, which would win many US races now. If I saw myself as one of the two (S, Rogers), it was Shorter.

From my perspective, you have made your case, such as it is, long ago -- the rest is just boring (sorry, I haven't said that but once here, I think).

Obviously your running inspirations pre-dated Shorter (and there is no argument over the quality of the folks you mentioned), but they had little to do with the running/jogging boom. Outside of Ryun and maybe Mills, these guys did not make a big impression on the general US population. (Ryun because of the WRs, Mills because he had the same stage as Shorter.) And neither one had their best works presage a running boom.

The running/jogging boom was a 70s phenomena. Having Shorter on TV for a couple of hours winning the Oly marathon made a much bigger impression on the general US population than anything Lindgren or Schul did, and was followed almost immediately by the running boom. Bill Rogers’ popularity was in part because he was able to ride the crest of the already existing running boom wave, and even then many more folks in the US can identify Shorter than Rogers. Track fans may have other favorites from that time (Pre, for one) but the running boom was not mounted by track fans, but instead by everyday people, many of whom were inspired by Shorter.

Do you know of anyone who started running cause of Shorter? I don't.

I mean that's nice he ran his marathon and all.

But of all the people I know of who started running, they had a myriad of other reasons for it.
