  • WC 200m most exciting event

I think the mens 200m is by far the most anticipated sprint race of these championships. I cannot remember the last time an Olympic, World, and European champion has gotten less respect than Kostas Kenteris. I saw where Capel still refers to him as the "Greek boy". Capel wants to beat Kenteris in the worst way. He is still very bitter about the Syndey 200m final not being called back. Capel believes that he definately would have won that final. I don't think he would have. Capel' reaction time was a horrible .36 and he ran a 20.49. Lets say he reacted with a .160 that only gives him a time of 20.29. Kenteris ran 20.09.
The key to this years 200m will be in the first 100m. If Capel gets out quick and leads by more than a meter coming of the turn the race is his. Capel has superior 100m speed (9.97) but Kenteris has superior speed endurance and will win the race if he is close to the front coming off the turn. If kenteris waits to find an extra gear in the final 50m he made not have it in a fast race. Kenteris Also must run through the tape and not get cocky at the end or he will get out leaned and lose. It will be very interesting to see how he handles a close race because he really hasen't been challenged in the last three years.

Although you can't rule out Johnson, Patton, and Fredricks, I think Capel and Kenteris are the front runners. It's going to be a great race!

"If Capel gets out quick and leads by more than a meter coming of the turn the race is his."

Anyone leading by more than a meter off the curve would win.

That statement is bascially the same as saying "if Capel crosses the finish line first, he wins!"

A 1m lead at 100m is not much. Definitely does not assure anyone of victory. I'm pulling for John-John.

Did you see the video? It was much more than slow reaction time, he had absolutely no start. If he had just run his race, I'm pretty sure he would have won, but of course, if monkeys could fly . . .

I think we are going to have the same kind of finish like the last worlds. Its definitely not a two man race. Remember the US Trials how they were spread across the track? Whoever maintains their composure the best in the last 10 metres will win. I predict a five man blanket finish. I am leaning towards Capel but then there is JJ finishing best of all, the Greek, Patton the US champ, the veteran Frankie (rounding into form) and of course that kid Bolt......... Oh man I can't wait!!!!!!

I'll bet big money that Bolt is not a factor

Re: WC 200m most exciting event

Here are the six (6) fastest performers (non altitude)based on seasonal bests entered in the event.

                JJ Johnson 20.05
                Usain Bolt 20.13
                Darvis Patton 20.14
                John Capel 20.17
                Frankie Fredericks 20.23
                Christian Malcolm 20.25

JJ did that time some time in May while Bolt did his time on his last outing. The kid also wisely skipped the Pan Am Games. The kid has two other times faster than 20.25 and must be a factor. The only question mark is whether he can survive four (4) rounds.

Sorry, but I still the event is wide open even for Bolt.

Well, Capel would surely have a faster time if he hadn't been kicking ass in the 100 all summer.

I was being smug, because an earlier thread reported he would not be competing in individual events. But I see that he is on the squad, so maybe he will. I profusely apologize. Once again I fell for the old 'if it's in print, it must be true' thing. How naive.

What must Doc Patton do to get some respect here: He WILL win the 200m

I certainly agree that Kedéris/Capel will be a classic. K has blown me away watching his wins in Sydney and Edmonton, but after seeing Capel in the 100 at Zürich I think lane draw will be the deciding factor. if Capel is outside KK and has enough of a lead coming into the straight that he can't see the Greek, he may well not keep the hammer down long enough, not realizing how incredible K is in the last 50m.

As for most-anticipated, let me just say that I've had conversations with maybe 100 people on the men's 100 and 2 on the 200. It's the nature of the beast.

And as exciting as the 200 is, seems pretty safe to say that one of two guys will win, whereas in the 100 there's, yikes!, maybe a half-dozen guys who could take it? Pending a return to for Monty and Greene in the prelims, my money is on Chambers at this point. Next most-mentioned favorite among thsoe I've spoken with here is Collins.

I see a carbon copy of what we've been seeing.......

Coming off the curve the speedsters look to be running away with it, when here comes the strength of the 400 meter man. That was what set MJ apart, his 400 endurance. Kederis was a 400 guy!

Fredericks and Ato were both 9.86 guys while MJ couldn't break 10.00 so how did he beat them? Try speed endurance, that is Kederis's strong suit!
