Re: It was 20 years ago today...

    >it's a part of track & field history, none-the-less. i, too, am saddened that
    >these "records" are still in places. everybody look at this:

    Marion Jones
    >10.70
    Merlene Ottey 21.64
    Marie Jose-Perec 48.25
    Ana Quirot
    >1:54.44...

how refreshing does that list look. i mean just looking at the
    >marita koch race is, i believe, evidence of her drug use. the race was poorly
    >executed! she started to tie up in the final few strides of the race.
    >obviously it wasn't her technique that fueled those records.

    Hassiba Boulmerka 3:55.30
    Gabriela Szabo 8:21.42
    Paula Radcliffe 30:01.09

The ironic thing is that there are question marks against several of the names you have mentioned above. I don't agree that Koch's run was poorly executed - she only tied up at the end and she had been running at a faster pace than ever before, plus there was a headwind in the home straight and no-one close to her. You must be very difficult to please!

svetly's 4'12 wr is intrinsically far superior to bouly's time - if she'd run a 1.5k that day instead, her time wouda been ~ mid-3'53

imho, the actual 1.5k wr is svetly with ~ 3'53.5

if they hadn't changed the women's jav specs, that record would have outlasted dirt.
tell me now, why did they change the women's javelin? it's not like they were hitting 100 m like the men's.

desire to get rid of bad calls on flat throws, so new implement basically always lands point-first

i agree. svetlana masterkova's mile from zurich '96 is probably the best clean performance ever at the 1.5k/mile distance. if i remember correctly, track & field news converted her 4:12.56 mile as being worth 3:53.85.

obviously marion jones's mark is considered questionable because of the balco scandel, but specifically which of the others are questionable, too?

that conversion is with the standard 1.08 factor used for converting between 1.5k/1M races & 3k/2M races

however, svetly had superb 1'56.04 speed that year, which makes that conversion slightly ungenerous to her - i get a figure more like

              ~3'53.6

it's a bit pedantic to quibble over ~ 2/10, but at this rarified level, she shoud fight for every 0.01s which is her due !
