      Help me out here.

      I'm listening to the feed as we "speak". Good stuff. Thanks for posting. But I just don't get the "Podcast" thing. As I clicked through the links, the thing eventually wound-up playin' through the Quicktime plug-in. None of the fancy podcast applications that I've seen referenced required. Am I using some such application by way of having an iPod with iTunes software on my computer?

      But more importantly for me, whenever I've seen things listed as "Podcasts" I find that they are downloadable as MP3s. I munged about 'n found that this is the case with this interview. I downloaded it.. Very simple. This is my preferred modus operandi for this kinda stuff as I can play it at my leisure on whatever machine I happen to be working on and even take it with me on the iPod if I choose. So why not just post the MP3 'n get on with it?

      So what am I missin' here? How is the "Podcast" thing any different'n any other version of streaming or file-based audio that I've been doin' fer years?

      Once again, thanks fer the post 'n hostin' a hideaway for us current 'n former jumper types.

        Podcast = Audio

        You should listen to the other ones we have done as well, I think you would enjoy them.

          In a nutshell, podcasting is the relatively new phenomenon of publishing media files--usually MP3s--so that they are available for download to anybody who subscribes to them. A typical podcast is a talk radio show, recorded so that you can listen to it when it's convenient for you. The underlying transport technology is no different from an RSS newsfeed, except that you listen to the feed rather than read it.

          Creating your own podcast involves recording your show in MP3 using a microphone, recording software such as GarageBand or SoundForge Audio Studio, and more applications for advanced radio-style techniques such as live interviews via phone or audio- or videoconferencing.

            Thanks Trackshark

            So if I understand correclty, the term Podcast is really just a blanket term to describe the distribution of audio content which can be downloaded or streamed via the Internet to a number of player devices. I understand that the content is generally homegrown stuff available from non-professional sources using whatever type of software the "publisher" uses to record it. Garage band talking heads, if you will.

            I further understand that access may or may not be limited to subscribers and doesn't seem to require any special software as does RSS. In this respect, it isn't really a new phenomenon or technology, but rather, just terminology as I've been gettin' this kinda stuff fer a long time from various sources. The primary difference as I see it is that it's downloadable and transferable to other devices as oposed to sources like NPR that stream (only in Real Audio format only in my experience). I'm just thrilled that most of the "Podcasts" I've run across don't require me to install that godawful Real Player nonsense on my computers.

            Does the Pod in Podcast come from any connection to the iPod? I noticed that my iPod has a configuration option fer Podcasts. I haven't explored that nor do I see any need as I can simply import an MP3 file into my library, though I ain't tempted as I prefer to use that fer music, but if I could get some of the NPR stuff on it I might just change my ways. Those occasional long trips down I-5 through central California (broadcast radio's little corner of hell!) were just made fer the iPod 'n my wife's musical tastes are a world apart from mine. Maybe a little recorded "Science Friday" or "Talk of the Nation" would provide a happy medium.

            Thanks fer helpin' me become a bit less ignorant on the subject.

              Yes, that is correct. It's just a clever marketing term because of the iPod. You can drag that MP3 into your iTunes which then plays in your iPod.

              If you really look at the big picture, it's just an audio file that you can record and listen to digitally slapped with "Podcast" across the top of it.

                OK< thanks, I get it now. I thought a podcast included video (why wouldn't it? - too much data for the stream?).

                Thanks so much for doing these - I will indeed go back thru the others. I will see you in a month, yes?
