How did they break Kamathi? Start slow and gradullay get faster - after intentionally training to do that?

    Re: Ethiopians sweep

I followed the race by watching the IAAF Live Results page, but it kills me I couldn't have actually watched it. What a great race. I couldn't even listen to it! Eurosport has a live audio internet feed, but I can't get it to work anymore. They changed something a while back, and now it just tells me I need some sort of Real Player plug-in, but I can't find it on the real player page. Maddening. It looks like Geb tried to run Bekele into the ground, but Bek outkicked him.

I think it was a huge negative split which tells me that saw that as a weakness in Kamathi or they trained to do that.

Bekele's splits 13:52.33/12:57.25. Note that the last 5k is faster than American record for 5k (discounting the running start :-) ). We'll have tons of splits on the race in eTrack Newsletter.

          Re: Ethiopians sweep

How many people have run the last 5k of a 10k under 13:00?

When did Kimathi step off? How long did he continue to run after the three Ethiopians dropped him?

OB-sad-state-of-non-african-distance-running: It will be tough to be competitive in the 10 if you can't run under 13:00 in the 5...

So do you think that was intentional or just the way it worked out?

I don't think anyone has run the 2nd half under 13:10 before.

                Re: Ethiopians sweep

just seen the race live on the BBC, right at 5000 the 3 ethiopians took off, Geb did most of the pacemaking , Bekele did a little but got right behing Geb for the last 2 k, Sihine sat behind and contributed nothing, Kamathi went on the lap they ran in 61.7 and fell back down the field like he had been shot. Geb was dignity in defeat and would have beaten any other 10000 runner in history on the day, but 12;57 for the last 5000, well...

I don't think Geb was trying to run Bekele into the ground. He was trying to run the Kenyans into the ground - and it worked. He would have liked the personal win but prefered the 1-2-3. He was responsible for setting it up for the Ethiopians and his protoge had the better finish. If Bekele would have led, would Geb had won? Probably. Geb is still the man! He controlled the race and was single responsible for the Ethipians success.

Who is that guy from Quatar who placed 4th and lapped all the Americans (oops). Is he another mercenary a la Cherono.

That's absolutely surreal. Bekele ran 12:52 for just 5 at Oslo.

Just waiting to watch it on the CBC shortly. The fact that I know what is going to happen won't ruin it. Read it and weep. 4 hours of coverage today and a 2 hour encore show tonight. Almost too much.

We got 2 copies of ETN(at least I did) today. Both with just finals-it was a duplicate. Was one supposed to be results of prelims and heats?
