  • World Junior 100m Record

10.01 for Darrel Brown..... that's entirely too fast for an 18-year old if you asks me!

Montgomory ran 9.9x when he was 19. Unofficial I suppose, but have heard him saying that in an interview.

Montgomery ran 9.96 while a freshman at Blinn JC. He did it at Odessa, Texas, at the JUCO nationals.

I'll leave it up to the "official" folks like Bob Hersh to explain why the record was never ratified.

The track was measured as short. Not short by much as I recall but, it was short (4cm sticks in my head).

I read in some web site that Marion Jones said that if weren't because of the delay Brown could have gone under 10.00.
I really think that he is the new big name from Trinidad and Tobago.

Yep your right. Well almost, according to the statistics the track ws 3.6cm short...
Tim and MLF have the 2 Fastest ''unofficial'' Junior Men's 100m times.
Tim with 9.96s(short track by 3.6cm!) in Raleigh in 1994,
& Mark Lewis Francis with 9.97s(remember the memorable wind-gauge malfunction in 2001)in the Edmonton WCh in 2001.

                Mark failed on two counts:
                1. Track was a few centimeters short (so T&FN carried it as a "converted" 9.97).

                2. Wind gauge was placed outside the track instead of inside. i.e., right up against the stands, where there was certainly a wind shadow, so had to be called windy.

What the hell was I thinking???

If Darrell Brown runs 9.95s in either the Semi or the Final, all the un-ratified,unofficial short track and wind-guage malfunction World Junior bests will be forgotten and all the hoohah about who's the fastest Junior will be forgotten.

                    Go Darrell!!!

Although it's only six years old, about time this record. For once, no short track & no crap wind gauge either!

He ran 9.96 at the age of 19. Last I heard, the straightaway measured a centimeter or two too short. Technically, he ran 9.97. I'll have to check my old T&FN magazines to refresh my memory on how short the track was.

I think the King has it right about the measurement of the straightaway (3.6cm short); however, I'm not sure about the story on the wind gauge.

                            It's not a story, it's a fact.

A word on the Amer. Junior 100m record set by Blanton at the Midwest regional. I was there competing and there's no way at any point the wind was legal. The wind guages were definitely reading incorrectly. During the long jump, I saw people standing in front of the wind guage while it was reading. Many of the readings I saw were ludicrous considering the conditions. I saw some 0.5m/s and others around there.
