  • A solution to the "Track-Lack" problem

I really hate winter where it's time for indoor sports, even arena football. Basketball really sucks.

So why not year round outdoor Track and Field. Divide the seasons into 2 parts, Northern and Southern (as in hemispheres). When the Northern season is winding down when the leaves begin to turn, the Southern season can be starting during the "down under" spring. Just think....athetes with year round tans who own only summer clothes.

Year round TandF results would be paradise. Isin could really set big marks.

    Sigh, just a dream.

I am a Californian who really hates the cold. Maby we can get Arnie to ban winter.

    Jack,

Come on, this is CA, baby. It can't be that cold (unless you live in one of those mountain areas no one lives in). Its 57 in beautiful downtown Oakland right now. Not toasty, but certainly not cold.

Maybe you should do like I did once and move out of state for a bit. After two years in purgatory (Nashville, TN – just kidding – a wonderful place ‘cept for that weather) I swore that I would never say that the Bay Area was either hot or cold. Folks who live here do not know what hot or cold really are.

Um, ever hear of indoor track? Come on up to balmy New England and we'll introduce you to it

How about adding indoor track to the winter olympics? It's purely a winter sport and deserves recognition as a specialty of track and field separate from outdoor events. Not gonna happen in our lifetime but we can dream.

It's been brought up many times in the past, but the IOC's position on this is clear: the winter olympics can only include sports which require snow or ice.

Actually, a 12k cross country race would make perfect sense in the Winter Olympics. Who's going to start the petition?

I believe this has been tried as well. XC may take place on snow, but it is not necessary, thus, again, it doesn't qualify.

Good news: that vision is a reality. Australia, New Zealand, and Southern Africa have many meets in that other season -- generally September to through March.

They include all the currently familiar events plus interesting oldies such as 200m hurdles. Some world-class athletes from other regions travel to Southern Hemisphere competition -- including the Commonwealth Games.

Concurrent with many open meets the schools down under have a season that ends in December; the better school athletes then move in January to a variety of GP meets and championships.

I get big time withdrawal symptoms once the season ends. I got this year when the worlds were over, I guess if you like marathon running you can still enjoy track until about this time of the year.........
