Do we have their "starting time"; i.e., did they both cross at 0:00.00? Not that it really matters, because if they were slow off the line it was their fault, not the effect of being block by 500 runners.

Unless I'm mistaken, the elites started in front of the chip mats. Thus they would not cross a mat at the start.

, the elites started in front of the chip mats.
Does that mean the elites ran short? or were the chip mats set at slightly over 42195 meters?

I suppose you'd have to ask people who do those finish lines. But I think it evens out in the end. The elite people start on the official starting line, the rest of us mortals start behind the mats about 5 to 10 meters behind the official starting line. Then there is the official finish line, and the finish mats are about 5 to 10 meters behind the finish line. Maybe Mr. Monti or some of the finish line people will elaborate.

            1. The elite athletes started at the exact starting line. They all received a "gun time"
            2. The elite athletes all had 2 chips (one on each shoe).
            3. The other 37, 000+ runners started behind the timing mats behind the elite runnes. They received both "gun" and "chip times". Timing mats should always be behind the start.ing line
4.The finish line was the front edge of the timing mats. There was a 5cm wide white line at that point.

"Measurer" is exactly correct. The elites are walked over the chip mats to register them at the start, but they start right on the starting line and receive only a gun time.
