Though he hit 65 home runs to set Oklahoma high school career record, his credentials were all basketball (along side with shot put).

All I can say, shot or discus or whatever, he needs to start specialising soon or he'll end up a coulda been. Amazing talent.

Bookout back trying hoops again (may think shot for 2012); story now on front page.

Really, really tired of Bookout stories. I'm opposed to early specialization in athletics (especially since it hurts T&F) but this is taking it too far. Go play ball and leave the press for those who really love the sport and are willing to spend more than a few minutes on it.

I concur... he seems like a wholesome kid and is obviously a gifted athlete, but realistically he has no chance for 2012 or any other Olympics. His most impressive marks came as an 11th grader using the HS shot and he has done very little that indicates significant improvement since then. Too much lost time, the window of opportunity for him to have become a world class guy has closed.

You may be right. But I must say that I saw Bookout when he was in high school and was absolutely awed. I've been disappointed that he hasn't lived up to what I thought was his potential. I don't know why he hasn't. Maybe I just misjudged his potential.

Bookout is certainly physically impressive. He calls to mind Randy Matson. But watching him last spring at the NCAA finals, although his ht. and reach gave him great leverage, he looked slow of foot and slow of arm. Could be that better conditioning and better technique could bring him around but not if he is occupied playing hoops. Noah Bryant won the NCAA meet. In HS Bookout's marks were consistently several feet beyond Noah's HS PR. It just seems too tough to reel competitors back in after giving up so much ground to them.
