If Montgomery really did leave for no reason other than he was upset (i.e. not injured, no family emergencies) then the USATF should suspend him. Just like they should have done last year to Seneca Lassiter after he rabbited for Legat in the World Cup. I'm sorry, but it's unconcionable to leave your teammates hanging like that.

I am NOT trying to cause trouble here, but for the life of me I cannot how Monty could just go home, when he is the country's best 100 runner, and leave his country and his teammates in the lurch. To me, his behavior is worse than Drummond's and as far as I am concerned he is a disgrace and should be banned from next year's Olympic Team. Quitter. What would they do in the Army if a soldier deserted under fire and left his platoon alone without his assistance ?

You fellows are berating Monty without knowing the facts.

When the relay teams were preparing he was on maternity duty. He probably was not considered.

In the Berlin meet the USA ran two squads and he was not a member of either.

tim montgomery even though he has the world record, he is no lock for 1 of the top 3 spots on the olympic team,if he is injured he should of made a statement himself or through his agent about why he left. i think we can win the 4x100 anyway with williams the 200 meter runners, i would even put a hurdler or long jumper in there, i would not concede this race, we can win.

I have always liked Tim Montgomery. If indeed he was never going to be on the relay squad, that is one thing..... is this correct or not ?

If indeed he was never going to run, I would like to see that publicly addressed by both him and USATF. And if that's the case, I certainly apologize for my previous comments.

kThe relay pool was set before the meet. The five remaining are John Capel, JJ Johnson, Darvis Patton, Coby Miller, and Bernard Williams. As I understand it, they are the only ones who can run, now that Greene, Montgomery, and Drummond are gone.

I seriously doubt this. He was in the pool of 8 runners, and if he was "not considered", I think we would have heard about it.

I have asked before... what does anyone KNOW about all this, not what any of us think ?

Newclip on the letsrun website certainly implied he left town on his own with no consultation with USATF.

Can't someone in a position of knowledge or authority make a statement on all this ?

And I am not worried about winning the stupid race. It's just a track meet. I just do not think it's right to skip town, unless he truly was not ever considered to run.

With regard to the question of whether Greene, Drummond and Montgomery can be replaced by somebody not previously identified as being part of the "pool", such as Allen Johnson (or Joey Woody!), I found the pertinent requirements in the meet's IAAF-published Team Guide.

I'll leave it up to you guys to figure out what it means, but it MIGHT mean that replacements are possible up until the 1st round begins.

2.1.3. Final Confirmation of Relay Teams.
Each IAAF Member Federation can register one (1) team per relay event.
The relay teams may be made up of six (6) athletes at the most. Once a
relay team has started in a competition, only two additional athletes may be
used as substitutes in the composition of the team for subsequent rounds
(IAAF Rule 170.17). The four first competitors and all substitutes of a relay
team can only be the athletes registered for this event or any other event in
the competition. However, any athlete who does not participate in an event
once his or her final validation has been given or after qualifying via the
qualifying round or qualifying heats of this event cannot be registered as an
incoming runner or substitute (IAAF Rule 142.4).
The names and order of competitors in the relay events must be officially
announced before the start of each round of the competition. (IAAF Rule
170.18). Once an athlete who has competed in a previous round is replaced
by another incoming runner, he or she cannot return to the team. This
declaration must be made at Call Room no.1 by, at the latest, one hour
before the event’s planned start time. A Call Room Official will be assigned
to Call Room no.1 at specific times for this purpose.

What this sounds like to me is that by the day of the start of the relay, the U.S. has to announce it's final 6 people that will be running. The relay pool of 8 is only something that is designated by the U.S. as to ensure that there are enough bodies there in case of injury etc. to athletes competing in other events. By the time the event starts, only the six can be rotated to run. As of now it seems that there are five who were part of the original pool and I am only wondering if guys such as Gatlin and Grimes are in Europe at the moment.
