  • Social Misfits, or They Can't Outrun the Law...

Geez, what is wrong with kids these days?? First Bobby Lockhart get arrested for assault on his girlfriend and now Jackie Zeigle gets hauled in for making racist statements and threatening harm on a teammate.

Thanks for that gh. After reading the article you can see clearly how sinister this is, you dont even have to read between the lines . This is not just a college relationship gone bad, This is hate speech, pure and simple. If this is tolerated there is no safe quarter. If this is not severely punished and these two are not publicly humiliated and every detail of their email correspondence is not brought to light then there is no justice and there should be no peace. This is a man who has been robbed of his dignity. This is a sign of serious decay at the core of the UC value system. If the jury is worth its weight in burritos these two miscreants will be forced to watch 100 hours of diversity training videos and attend sensitivity seminars until they graduate.. .. that is if they should even be allowed to graduate, the verdict is still out on that one... Didnt we go through all of this with Clarence and Anita back in 91....... have we taught our children nothing? For heavens sake, Just do it, if only for the children.
... nothing really ever changes my friend, new lines for old, new lines for old.

I read a whole bunch about all this on letsrun. Affirms my belief that sub-23's, particularly college kids, particularly athletes, have a high level of immature self centered idiots in their midst. Were most of us that way too ? Probably we were.

Can the TAFNEWS Message Board issue a formal challenge to the letsrun.com board to see which one can beat up this inane topic the best/most/quickest/longest? (The fact this is what gets the letsrun groupies going says a lot. Also, I see that they have this little feature on their board: "We encourage you to report posts to us that you would like removed using the "report a post" feature." What fun!)

The moderation of the board (and its lack thereof) leads to a lack of "moderation" by a significant subset of the posters. Probably the biggest single problem is that you do not have to really register to post, so people can say outragous things without anything worse then having the post removed (with a lag). They would do well to copy the formula for posting used here.

They have vastly more posts and maybe they depend on the traffic level to make operating expenses.

This Board will never remotely challenge letsrun for volume. A combination of hard-assed moderation and an intemperate hard core of posters with often a tough stance on grammar and knowledge make this too scary a site for youngsters to visit, unfortunately.

intemperate: given to excessive use of intoxicating liquors

Where is the party?? I guess my invitation was lost in the mail.

Why unfortunately? This is best thing I have heard in a long time. We must be doing something right.

I sincerely hope that someone at the Univ. of Colorado has established a fund for the recuperation and rehabilitaiton of this fellow Carlos. If someone finds out please post so that we can all donate.

Clearly this is a textbook case of what we veterans of college life call post traumatic stress disorder. Exposure to this type of shock and awe verbal harrassment will not fade easily. Besides the obvious legal costs he will incure in prosicuting this there will be the insomnia, and cold sweats. There will be the flashbacks and blackouts from the small "ding" of his computer speaker echoing in his ears bringing back vivid hypertext images of those callous emails on that fateful day.

I ask all of us to be vigilant for peace and civility. Erase the hate.

Do I really need to spell it out. This remains, above all else a commercial venture. If the magazine is going to continue to cater to its core audience and remain fuddy-duddy, that's a problem we'll have to live with. But it would be nice if our attempt to branch out into "new media" would be friendly to those who use it as their primary means of communication.

To have it become the exclusive province of a bunch of crotchety old men (including yours truly) isn't exactly what we had in mind. There'll be no next generation of subscribers generated here. And that's (way) unfortunate.
