I am just curious and new as a parent of a high jumper. My 13yo daughter won the 7a high jump in Illinois last spring. She set the all round record for 7th grade and state record. She jumped 5' 2.5". Where does this put her potentially and where would it rank her with girls her age.

That is a very good jump for a 13 year old girl. Her potential depends on how her body changes as she gets older.

A better question might be- how tall are you and your daughter's mother?

Agreed - a female high jumper needs to be a bit taller than 5-8 to become one of the elite. Torso development is another matter to consider.

So many intangibles and variables here. But she sounds like she is quite physically mature for her age, so she might have a lot of other gals start catching up with her.

Just have her HAVE FUN, develop good technique, and see what happens. Maybe she'll flatten out at 5'6" or less, or maybe she'll jump 6' 6"..... probably somewhere in the middle... only time will tell. Best of luck to her.

That is an impressive mark for a 13yo girl.

I am 13yo now, and when I was 12yo I jumped 1.50m and 1.49m(x2)(Hopefully someone can convert for me!) At the time I was 1.52m tall, so I think that my High Jump was pretty impressive, as I nearly jumped over my own head, and the leading marks of children in the country at U13 level in the GBR jumped around 1.55-1.65m and they were between 1.60-1.85m tall. Some were gigantic!.This was last and I was undefeated throughout the meetings that my club competed at. However I was only ranked =8th in the country(GBR). The highest that year was 1.60m I believe.

If I sound like I am gloating, please forgive me, but I feel proud of my achievements.

It's great to be proud of your marks (and, for the original poster, your daughter's marks). Just have fun and enjoy competing and don't bother to make projections about the future. For young competitors, female or male, there are far too many variables in her future to make any assumptions. Just have fun!

Your right about the having fun and enjoying Track and Field. At young ages it's vital that kids enjoy the sport and consider a future in the crazy World of Track and Field. Talent comes and goes, so if it(talent) comes along, take advantage of it and train the spirit.
