  • WOMENS 800 FINAL

Has anybody else noticed that it appears as if Mutola was coaching Kelly Holmes during the 800 semis and finals.

Is she her coach or what?

The event was practically a training run for Mutola. She was so busy watching the event and coaching she almost forgot to kick and secure the Gold Medal.

    They are training partners.

If Mutola were actually a woman it would be more interesting.

Just because she looks more like a man than you do, is no reason to be jealous. You could lift weights too. She is all woman, but you have a very narrow-minded vision of what a woman should look like. Your problem.

In today's track world, if you're on top for as long as she is, that pretty much takes you off the suspect list in my book. She's basically been between 1:55-1:58 for 10-12 years.

Besides, anyone whose name is "Maria de Lourdes" has to be way cool.

Just because you fantasize about transexuals and ladyboys doesn't mean you have to get hot under the collar at someone speaking their mind.

Mutola is so unfeminine it's scary. It's almost like seeing a mediocre man race women.

Are there going to be any US distance runners in the finals this year? Krummenacker should make the finals in the men's 800.

Things have never been worse for US distance runners.

Even the Japanese distance runners have gotton at least one runner to the finals.

There must be an investigation into why US distance runners are not competing after these world championships.

Even non-African foreigners like Nick Willis and Kevin Sullivan are getting the better of US distance runners.

Yeah maybe then you could focus on the race and stop lusting over her.

Maybe the distance coaching at Collegiate level is suspect.

I mean Adam Webb comes straght out of High School running great times and deteriorates.

Arkansas dominates Collegiate distance running with some real average talent.

Mutola looked great though. There is no one on the horizon in the immediate future to challenge her.

Scary to who? Let's take a guess. I wonder if it scares "men" [with small dicks] who see her as more masculine than they are.

                        Re: WOMENS 800 FINAL

Castigations about manhood by anybody who comments about distinctions in athletic preparation by women and 'what seems to work for them' event-by-event are unwarranted.

Have you noticed that the relative musculature among elite female 800m runners these days is greater than among MALE 800m runners?
There have always been some 'big muscular' men 800m runners- Juantorena was probably a prototype-and many of us at the time thought that that kind of body was the prototype for the future for the men's 800- but some of today's women 800 athletes would give even Alberto a run for his money in the 'ripped' category.
And today much of the men's event is still dominated by the Filbert Bayi / Sebastian Coe / Wilson Kipketer body frame model.

So WHY are women going some rapidly in an opposite direction from the men? Contrary to comments by other's, they DON'T seem to be following the male model.
There is no doubt that fast 800 racing requires SOME upper body strength (800 was my event 30 years ago). Are women and their coaches so cognizant of the natural comparitive lack of upper body strength by females, that they are now OVER-compensating in weightlifting and strength training?
Could women race EVEN faster than they are today if they were to cut back on the strength training a little bit?
Instead of looking to a male model to follow, perhaps they are just trying to follow the gradual trend over the last 20 years among successful WOMEN 800 racers; but maybe if they want to get even better it might be worthwhile to go back and look once again at what works well for the men. Muscles will only get you so far...

                        ...just an observation...

PREDICTION: The first women to break 1:50 will NOT be a poster girl for Gold's Gym.

                            Re: WOMENS 800 FINAL

A good percentage of the women in the sprints and throws have the muscalature that makes them look somewhat masculine. Mutola is not a special case or any different then the other muscular women sprinters or throwers or athletes. It should not be surprising that anyone (male or female) that runs 51 seconds and 1:55 for 400 and 800 meters respectively, is muscular.

Exactly. There have always been sprinters who "move up" to the 800. Juantorena was one of those.
But men seem to have a blend both ways- there are just as many (probably more) who are "middle distance runners" and move down. That's where you get the Sebastian Coe types.

But 800 women seem to be dominated by the "sprinter" types bodies these days, quite different than the men.
No Zola Budds or teenage Mary Deckers.

By the way, you don't need to have exceptional musculature to have adequate speed for the 800.
Jim Ryun was what- a 46-47 relay leg racer?- and he wasn't exactly Mr. Olympia.
