Has this ever happened before?

Has an athlete ran faster EN ROUTE than the winner of a shorter event (excluding 200/100) in a championship meet?

I can't think of any other example.

Would be fun to see Bekele win in 12:58 or so, just so that his amazing negative-split will be remembered even more.

in the womens world record 10k, wang junxia ran her second 5k in 14.26, which is faster than the current womens 5k record of 14.28

Don't think it's happened in a World or Oly Champs, though.

In the '87 10K, Paul Kipkoech (RIP) ran his last 5k in 13:25.57, faster than the 13:26.44 that Aouita ran to win the 5000 later that week.

Harald Norpoth and Michel Jazy had a famous race (maybe twice?) along that line in Euro Cup competition. A classic see-who-blinks-first competition with a last 800 in something like 1:52 as I recall.

MJD - your not dreaming - 1-2 years ago I believe the grand prix final went in 15+ (I think) with a 52ish last last and a bunch of guys finishing within a few seconds.

Her kilo splits were 2:42.0 - 2:47.7 - 2:36.5, so it's reasonable to assume that her 1500 splits were around 4:06 + 4:00.1. In her 10k record the fastest 3k was 8:17.5 and the fastest 5k was 14:14.0, both comfortably ahead of the current WRs
