  • Two Big MIAs--Marion & Gail

In case you're wondering why there hasn't been a peep in the pages of T&FN--or anywhere else that I know of--regards what plans, if any, Jones and Devers have for '06, join the club. We can find anybody else who knows either. And they're not responding to inquiries at all.

(somebody's law: there will be a story in somebody's paper tomorrow w/ details one what one of them is up to)

    Two ideas:

Call USATF media office, or email Jill Geer. "Hi, Jill! How's the baby? How's Marion? Thanks! Buh-bye!"

Or call USADA and ask if Marion or Gail are still considered active athletes subject to out-of-competition drug-testing.

When Johnny Gray left the "pro" ranks, he spoke of his relief of not having to submit to dinnertime knocks on the door. He also said he had to complete some paperwork to officially take himself out of the dope-check loop.

Is there a Freedom of Information Act in track?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought I read or heard (don't remember where) that Gail retired. Or maybe I just heard of her plans to retire after such and such season?

Why should Gail retire? She's only about--what--68 years old... If I remember correctly, she first competed in the '56 Melbourne Games...

        :? :!:

I also believe Roger Bannister is retired but this may be incorrect.

I'm proud to say that I recently trounced Sydney Wooderson in a mile race! He's not quite in the form he used to be...

If you're implying that I could ONLY beat dead people...well...you're not too far wrong, but NO, I'm happy to report that the great Mr. Wooderson is still alive, although he is quite old and his eyesight is pretty much gone (from what I've been told). A great moment in my life was shaking his hand in 1994...

i tried to give you a compliment and you accused me of being drunk! :x

so i thought i try a differant approach and imply the only people you could beat in a race are dead. :P

                  maybe a happy medium? :?

At the end of 02, 03 and in Athens in 04 (and probably earlier), Devers said she "might" call it quits, only to come back again. Except apparently this last time. Last time I asked her about retirement, she said the only certainty was that she wouldn't make any sort of announcement or statement.

After much similar searching at this time last year, we were finally able to get a Devers representative (she doesn't talk to anybody much) to say "she says she won't compete in '05 and hasn't decided about '06." Can't find anybody to give us any kind of comment this year.

                        "maybe a happy medium?"

What's the difference between a happy medium and a gay mystic? Just wondering...
