CAROL, DID U HAPPEN TO KNOW THAT THE "S" IN ILLINOIS IS NOT PRONOUNCED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just heard your call of Perdita Felicien's win of the 100mH and for the umpteenth time you prounouced Illinois with the "s" included. Obviously, you didn't seem to learn much in grade school.

For what it's worth, here's a portion of an e-mail from a friend in the U.S. relating his frustration with the ESPN commentators. He is NOT a hard core track fan, but rather one who watches most of the meets on TV and attends 2 or so meets a year:

"You would not believe the horrible coverage of the World's that we're getting over here. No more than 300m of the Men's 10K was shown and perhaps 400m of the Women's. But all the false starts on the 100 and 200 1/4 and semi's were broadcast. The endless pre-race interviews and bio's of the American athletes bordered on crass nationalism. And to top it all off was the inane chattering talking -heads. Specifically Carol Lewis and Larry Rosen [sic]. Here are two gems:

While describing the High Jump finals, Rosen [sic] (having previously described Stefan Holm as "the diminutive one") said "It was a battle between the pituitary cases and the midget."!!!

And when asked to give her opinion on the Women's 200m 1/4 finals, Carol Lewis said "The American women look extremely good. Of course Muriel Hortis, from Fraaance, is also going to be one who is looking to break up anything that has to do with America."

It doesn't get any better than this.

    So it goes."

That was D Stones who made the pituitary remark. To be fair, I listened to the BBC's commentary on Five Live of some of the Grand Prix meets and it is no better. The announcers told each little inside jokes and tried to be stand-up comics. Not impressed. I think they should go the minimalist route, just call the action.

Gee, I thought I was hard core, but that's about my average. What's it take to be a hard core fan these days? I do read this message board every bleeping day...

Having gone to college in Illinois, I've come across many people in the state who pronounce the "s". What does that say about grade schools in Illinois? GET A LIFE!

OK, I'll try and get one of those lives you want me to find.

Seriously, I've heard her make this same mistake in many other broadcasts. I have to seriously wonder about the educational process in general if school children in Illinois are pronouncing it with an "s". I mean, this is basic English. It's always been silent. I have no problem with Carol as a person as far as I know. She seems very nice and has demonstrated far better command of technical/athlete issues than Larry Rawson. I guess I'm just a little picky for some people.

              Kurt,

After reading your posts on the Marian Jones thread, I've noticed that you seem to have A LOT of trouble spelling A LOT. There has always been a space in between the A and the L. That's right! TWO WORDS. Most children learn this in grade school. What's your excuse?

Perhaps you and Carol could attend a few remedial classes together?

Didn't they teach you in grade to school to not rely on a single dictionary?

                http://www.macquariedictionary.com.au/p ... ang-a.html

                alot
(a common spelling error, but also used deliberately as a `cool' spelling)

                adverb
                1. a great deal: The traffic has eased up and we're cruising alot faster now.

                --adjective
                2. many; a great number or amount of: It was alot of fun.

                'cool' is cool.

As you (and the link you provided) elegantly pointed out -- ALOT was, and still is, a common spelling ERROR. Since Kurt feels so strongly that the misuse of "basic English" is such a great sin, then he, too, should not be making such common errors.

Let's all agree that Kurt should have refrained from making such a juvenile observation in the first place and put an end to it!

Okay, but what solution do you have for that cockroach in my keyboard? I think he got caught false starting and decided to lay down underneath my key caps in protest...

                          Randy,

You could always follow the lead of the IAAF. Inform the cockroach's federation that the have until noon tomorrow to come up with an appropriate punishment. If the punishment isn't severe enough or they use delay tactics, then I'd go head and smash the hell out of it!

OK, Linguist, I'll concede the argument to you on this topic. I now openly invite TFN to delete this thread as it is pretty much "juvenille" in that it was done in the "heat of the moment".

I sometimes do that. Sometimes I do it A LOT!
