At the gym someone had turned on the Animal Channel and they had an idiotic feature about how fast various creatures could run. The narration said that because the WR for women was improving at a faster rate than the WR for men, that in @ 150 years the Olympic final 100 meters would be won by a woman in a time just over 8 seconds. What a load of crapola, all stated seriously as if it were based on some scientific analysis.

with the woman's polevault improving so rapidly, lodgic dictates, the female record will be 5 ft higher than men by 2020!

      same lodgic-

      same faulty conclusion-

In the 2008 Oly Games 10,000, Tirunesh Dibaba will kick home the last 400 in 49 seconds, outkicking Bekele to win gold in sub-26. She's only 20 right now, and it stands to reason . . .

Ah, yes, I fondly remember the lively discussions we've had in the past on all this--the proper term for which is Nonsense on Stilts. More, please, more...

I am in a state of horrible panic. 2 hours ago the temp. outside was 25°, an hour ago 26°, now it's 27°. At this pace, we'll burn to a crisp in less than a week.

At my current rate of posting, I would have 100,000 (ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND!) posts by 2023! [oh wait, bad example - I really will  ]

Indirectly reminded me of a quote a friend who attended U. of Louisville School of Medicine told me about. First day of classes, some female prof always did an introductory speech before the first real lecture. The last part of it went, " Right now, you're caught up. In fifteen minutes, you'll be behind and you'll spend the rest of your life trying to catch up."

Also, oddly enough, one of my female partners has a patient, a young woman (20s/30s) who's maybe a bit too intense and driven and often wants to discuss and/or get affirmation from her doctor (my partner) in the middle of visits, ostensibly about her health, that, yes, someday women will run the 100 and the mile faster than men. My partner told her she couldn't really say if that would come to pass, but let's talk about your medical issues.

I think I might still be able to run a quarter in 60, I'll go see today. If so, then I should probably just keep going for three more laps, sprint a little at the end and crack 4:00.

Pretty conservative estimate on your part. Try more like a 1,000,000 by 2023. or did you mean 2/23/06? :?

Well I improved from a 4:31 at 18 to 4:19 at 21. So, does that mean I should have been able to run 4:07 at 24 and 3:55 at 27? Darn I should have kept training. :P
