Three Track Women Involved in Accident

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Three Middle Tennessee tracksters were involved in a hit-and-run accident Wednesday afternoon in Murfreesboro, with two LifeFlighted to Vanderbilt hospital, but all three are in stable condition and are in high spirits a little more than a day after the incident.
Sophomore Catherine Chester of Woodlawn, Tenn., freshman Tiffany Sawyer of Powell, Tenn., and freshman Kaitlyn Hammond from Bradford, Ontario, were running with teammates Marjorie Gombert and Ashleigh Thaler Wednesday afternoon just before 4 p.m. on Rutherford Blvd. just south of WalMart.
Chester, Sawyer and Hammond were all in good condition Thursday afternoon. Hammond will undergo knee surgery Friday at MTMC and Chester also has a knee ailment that is awaiting an MRI. Sawyer spent most of the day in surgery on her forearm, hip and pelvis, but none of the procedures were life-threatening.
"All three of the women are doing well, considering the situation," head coach Dean Hayes said. "The weather contributed to the accident, but it also helped Catherine and Tiffany. Two inches of rain really softened the blow.
"If you think fate doesn't play a factor in these instances, consider the girls decided about 50 feet from the accident whether to keep running that direction or turn right onto another street. They were at the wrong place at the wrong time, but they were also lucky to come away with their injuries and not something more serious."
A driver in a silver, newer model SUV, possibly a Ford, pulled out from Haven Drive near Campus Crossing South in the path of a Ford Explorer driven by Catherine Blackburn, 20, of Old Woodbury Highway.
The SUV that left the scene may have had damage to the driver's side rear bumper or quarter panel. The driver, who could face charges for leaving the scene, drove toward MTSU on Rutherford Blvd., according to the Murfreesboro police.
