But nobody knows how many people actually got infected at the meet, despite abiding by the rules. Some might have gotten the virus by breaking the rules, some might have been infected just before or during the trip, which means the tests on entry wouldn't have detected it yet. Plus I also agree the risk will be lower at an outdoor event.

                • Interesting as the author has very consistently been of the "watch out for what's coming around the corner" warnings throughout the crisis.

The article incorrectly says he went to San Diego State. Johnson ran for San Jose State, who featured him in this other article along with fellow SJ State alumnus Norton Thornton (swimmer) who also died on April 22: https://sjsuspartans.com/news/2021/4...1933-2021.aspx

                    • Venezuelan pole vault coach Carlos Faneith died of COVID recently. He was the coach of Robeilys Peinado (she confirmed on her Twitter that he died of COVID).

The article also mentions coaches Luis Chocho San Martín of Ecuador and Augusto Málaga of Peru dying recently, it sounds like they also died of COVID but I have not dug around to confirm.

This story confirms that Chocho was lost to COVID-19.

And unfortunately it was still impacting her at the Olympic Trials. She specifically mentioned issues with her heart rate being too high after racing, impacting her ability to recover.

Here is an article from before the meet:
                            https://www.usatoday.com/story/sport...ht/7708270002/

U.S. sprinter English Gardner says her lengthy fight with COVID-19 earlier this spring left her body in shambles. She had muscle cramps and leg pain. Headaches. Swollen joints. Full-body rashes. Extreme fatigue. Respiratory problems.

"It's been terrible," Gardner said in a news conference Tuesday. "If I can really be honest with you guys, it's been really, really terrible."

Missouri State withdrew from the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships due to positive COVID-19 test results within the team’s Tier I personnel, which consists of student-athletes, coaches, and staff.

Due to contact tracing, the team’s NCAA qualifiers will return to Springfield and withdraw from the three events they were scheduled to compete in Saturday: 100m dash, high jump and 4x100 relay.
