The Southwest Florida track and field community suffered a huge loss Tuesday as Dunbar coach Guy Thomas died from complications with COVID-19.

The 51-year-old had been hospitalized for more than a month due to the coronavirus and passed a little after 10 a.m. He leaves behind his wife India and four children. Dunbar High principal Carl Burnside said no plans have been made yet for services or a memorial.

Thomas, an Exceptional Student Education teacher at Dunbar, is a fixture in the Southwest Florida running community through his work with the Tigers track and field and cross country teams as well as his AAU Olympia Track Club.

Thomas was named the 2021 The News-Press/Naples Daily News' Jeff Sommer Memorial Coach of the Year Award winner, named after Thomas' friend and the late hall of fame Estero track and field/cross country coach, two weeks ago.

Reported weeks ago but not listed here is Alyssa Wilson.

Her comments to the press after OT Hammer qualifying:

On Covid-19 symptoms from earlier this year

I was trapped in my college dorm for about 24 days or so. It affected my training, and I lost like 20 pounds. Over the year I’ve just had nauseous feelings, especially on meet day, and I’ve had severe headaches. I’m just glad I’m over it.

Here is an article from before the meet:

U.S. sprinter English Gardner says her lengthy fight with COVID-19 earlier this spring left her body in shambles. She had muscle cramps and leg pain. Headaches. Swollen joints. Full-body rashes. Extreme fatigue. Respiratory problems.

"It's been terrible," Gardner said in a news conference Tuesday. "If I can really be honest with you guys, it's been really, really terrible."

The article incorrectly says he went to San Diego State. Johnson ran for San Jose State, who featured him in this other article along with fellow SJ State alumnus Norton Thornton (swimmer) who also died on April 22: https://sjsuspartans.com/news/2021/4...1933-2021.aspx

Interesting as the author has very consistently been of the "watch out for what's coming around the corner" warnings throughout the crisis.
